Would you play a Pokémon spinoff game that has:
>full 3d graphics
>no casual encounters (pokémon roam around in the overworld)
>seamless transition from exploration to battle
>no turn-based battle system
for Wii U (or the next Nintendo home console/handheld)?
I have some other ideas but I'll wait for answers first.

We already have it, it's called the sixth gen (and the Gamecube Games)

No, not really. Maybe if it was something like an action beat-em-up where you play as a Pokémon, but otherwise the formula just works.

As I stated in the OP, it would be a spinoff, so there's no reason it couldn't be an action jrpg.
We already had puzzle games, dungeon crawlers, pinball games, etc. so why not?
I can understand if you wouldn't want to play it though.

Sure, they look more boring when watching videos of them, but they end up being more tactical and nuanced. Action RPGs always end up as bastardized games where the combat isn't as fluid and fun as real action games, and the RPG elements end up taking a backseat to the shitty gameplay. This is why - for example - everyone likes Mass Effect for its (admittedly well-written) story, but no one sings praises about its incredibly mediocre gameplay.

I think a combination of both is incredible though. Like for example, have you ever tried Xenoblade Chronicles? The combat system in that is both fast, and requires a surprising amount of thought to work well.

If Pokémon were anything like that, you bet I'd play the everloving fuck out of it.

I have, and what I have in mind is pretty different.
You'd still control the trainer and not a Pokèmon. When in battle the control would move to the mon, but the player would still be there, shouting commands or giving healing items etc.

Poképark was pretty poorly executed. It looks beautiful, but the gameplay is kinda boring and overall is way too easy. Poképark 2 was a little better, but overall pretty terrible.

You play as a Pokémon trainer. As such, it makes no contextual sense for you to control the Pokémon in real time in battle.

I'm ok with turn-based actually, there's so much GF could do to spice things up without resorting to hybrids or, god forbid, full action. Like staple double/triple/more battles

It could work like this

I mean, even in the main games when in battle you technically play as the player but actually control the pokémon, so it would not make that much of a difference.

So you want the controls to change instantly over to your Pokemon when starting battle or do you play as the Pokemon the whole time?

Actually take time to explain how your game would play in detail instead of listing off 4 unoriginal ideas, I wouldn't play a game just because you can do these things, I want to play a game because it sounds like fun and your idea is incredibly vauge.

You play as a trainer like in the mainline games, traveling around the region, getting gym badges, catching pokémon, the usual.
The world is full 3d, left stick to move, right stick to control the camera.
Wild pokémon wander around, you may see swarms every now and then. Some mons are aggressive and will attack you, others will run away from you.
When you get a pokémon out on the field, control switches to him/her. 4 face buttons for the moves, triggers could be used to jump/roll/dodge. d-pad for items maybe?
As >>20576189 says, the player shouts commands during the battle.

I think it'd make more sense to focus purely on just using Pokemon however the roster would be limited if you only used Pokemon that could explore.

I dunno, maybe when the trainer thrws the pokéball, the camers follows it and when the mon comes out you control it and when the battle is over (or if you want to run from a wild encounter) you press a button to make the mon go back into the ball. Maybe it's not exactly seamless but it'd be different from the distinct separation that exists in the main games.

Yeah I guess. I used the term spin off because I couldn't come up with a better one. Maybe a parallel series, a different vision for the same game, kinda like 2D Marios and 3D Marios co-exist.

How is dodging to be balanced so that it isn't an instant break the game button? It could be based on speed or evasion, but that would make certain pokemon untouchable, save by an overwhelming focus on never miss moves. (would work like a homing missile) However, given that this is no longer turn based, perhaps we no longer need the speed stat altogether and a new stat that is affected by evasion is needed. Either that or we just gimp what was the speed stat so that pokemon wouldn't be untouchable godmoders. Priority would be meaningless, though.

What you seek is impossible because it is was never really "you" that's battling, but your pokemon. You can pretend it's you giving the commands and that every now and then, you toss a potion or two, but the battle still shifts over to another party. You are asking for pokemon to turn into Digimon World, and I cannot support such a notion. Control is everything, and I am not going to sacrifice that just because you don't want to directly control the pokemon. (no matter what you say, that is what's happening)

This is why I tell people to think their ideas through first since plenty of people think of seamless transitions and don't realise how difficult it is to implement for Pokemon since the battle has to start by a pokemon attacking or you throwing a ball near a pokemon. So far the only way I can see it happening is by working it out your self like I just did thanks to this thread.

As I said before, even in the main games when you're in battle, you technically are controlling the trainer but in fact you are controlling the pokémon itself.

I see a lot of problems with this

1. If an exceedingly rare roaming pokemon appears in front of a bunch of players, how are you going to decide who gets it?

2. For reason number 1, building good teams would take forever because of all the player competition for rare pokemon on maps

What is your solution to this?

I like this, how about we add a compromise and make the turns extremely limited on time. And you can set that required action time at the beginning of the game as a difficulty setting and if you don't make a move decision fast enough the mon resorts to struggle out of confusion
