You can say the same thing about Numelgon (jap name because filters). Sliggoo was a logical evolution to Goomy, and its Dex entry states it loses its eyes because it doesn't need them. But after Sliggoo, we get generic happy dragon #2 who makes no sense considering what the previous 2 stages were going for.

I will just never understand the thought process here. I might even like Dragonite if it didn't needlessly combo break a perfectly good series of Pokemon. There were all kinds of directions they could have taken that line that would have made sense and they picked the dumbest one. Dragonite is the visual equivalent of sad "bwah-bwahhh" disappointment trumpets.

His evolution also makes more sense once you know what he's based off of. He's based off the Imugi, a snakelike pseudo Dragon that lives in the water. If an Imugi lives for one thousand years, a jewel falls from the sky. If the Imugi can catch it, it becomes a true Dragon. The jewels on Dragonair's design support this.

As is evidenced by threads like this, many who liked Dragonair are baffled and appalled by what it suddenly turned into. If the designer had the intention of negatively spoiling people's expectations, then he was a troll; seeing how people like me are still butthurt after many years, he can be said to know his handicraft.

…except this is wholly irrelevant because those two were designed by Atsuko Nishida and Dragonite was shat out by someone else, I guess.

Got over Dragonite a long time ago, but when I think of what could've been, I get the feeling that they were trying to stream away from something that looked too much like Gyarados. Maybe if Gyarados's original color was red (gold shiny), then we could've gotten a winged leviathan, one that doesn't use its head wings to fly.

Dragonite is one of my favorites but I understand why people us butthurt. The first generation had a lot of evolutions that really didn't make any sense (eggs becoming a tree, Venomoth/Butterfree switch), and others that were incredibily lazy design (Dugtrio, Magneton, Muk, Electrode...)

They probably had two different lines of pokemons or something in mind but changed it at the last second and didn't give a shit.

Anyway, what's really important is that Sugimori ruined both lines. I could get over Dragonite, it's kinda cute and it was a "one time thing"... but to do another barney again with Goodra, fucking hell.
There are some rumors now where he apparently admits that it's a little "blocked" with his designs and that he's not going to design for the gen7.
