Complementary types are good. So if you go fire, a grass partner to deal with water types is nice.

I'd leave the starter to RNG. Constantly resetting is no fun especially in Time and Darkness when they force you to sit through the intro EVERY TIME. It's almost like they did it on purpose. Thank god they fixed it in Sky btw.

As for partner pick whatever complements you yeah.

I don't see this as any different than reseting for a beneficial nature for your starter in the main games.
I always thought it'd be cool if the mystery dungeon games had shinies other than pink celebi.
