5th gen had a lot of hype with the sprites, the special music, the PWC bringing back all the old leaders, champions and their music, and the fact that the Gym Leaders actually did stuff outside of their gyms for once and weren't just some figurehead.
XY is so dull compared, and the gymleaders were a cakewalk. Aside from Korrina and Wulfric, the gym leaders were really meh.
