I'm trying to get into competetive battling but I'm having a lot of trouble with the team building aspect of it.
I'm planning on making both a singles and doubles team and I want to have charizard Y in one of them but I don't know what other things I should take into account.
Also, do double battle team also work for triple battle, or do I need to create a whole different team for triples?

You'll find a lot more info on google than on here, since replies tend to be rather on the short side.

You can probably find essays (literally essays) on the subject on smogon, though.

In short, singles, doubles and triples will need their own team. They each have their own battle dynamic and styles of playing.

>Singles

Singles is about killing everything as quickly as possible. You generally want to outspeed and outpower your enemy. Since this is common, antithetical strategies are common, like stall or trick room.

You'll also find the hazard core in singles. This is very important in the higher levels of the competitive scene. Residual damage, in addition to direct damage is key to success.

>Doubles

Doubles is a LOT more varied in my opinion. There are abilities and moves that are exclusive to doubles. Pairings and choice of pokemon are somewhat more important in doubles. You CAN use a single-oriented team, but you'd want to make a doubles team for doubles

honestly, what helps me the most is finding teams others have made first and adjusting them to fit my own specific needs while battling. check smogon OU's RMT thread for singles teams (look for ones that specifically mention high ladder rankings, that means they're quite successful and well done). for doubles i check nugget bridge reports and use teams i like. once you get comfortable enough with the meta you can start to understand team building and start to get more creative & base it around mons you actually want to use, etc.

In doubles it's a good idea to make a team that doesn't have a keystone so to speak, it should still be functional if several pokemon or your most important pokemon go down. For instance, I use a Machamp. Machamp is slow, and weak to flying, making Talonflame a problem for him. However he does have Stone Edge to deal with it.

3 Pokemon on my team can support Machamp.

Raichu can Fake Out Talonflame so that Macamp can get a Stone Edge in. Klefki can Torment Talonflame and slow it down with Thunder Wave, letting Machamp get a Stone Edge in. Scyther can put up Quick Guard to stop Talonflame's Brave Bird.

In turn Scyther appreciate's Machamp's support as Machamp can protect him from Rock Slide with Wide Guard, Klefki appreciates also appreciates being protected from Heat Wave. Raichu and Klefki can also Torment+Encore a pokemon to force it into struggling. Which is hilarious. Klefki also appreciates Quick Guard from Scyther to give it some breathing room against faster Pranksters.

Generally, if a Pokemon doesn't have good synergy with at least 2 other Pokemon on your team, consider replacing it.

Singles is more straightforward, pokemon that can switch into each other's counters, or punish switch ins by double switching work well together.

Thanks guys, I'll get into Doubles first then, sounds way more interesting.
I'll begin checking what works well with Charizard Y and work around that I guess.

Lots of high ladder teams only work well for more experienced players.

I really think HO is the way to start out.

Probably I'd breed a few Smogon staples and play around with them for a bit.
