Most of them actually felt like characters that were active in the plot and could actually be found outside of their gym.

I'm surprised that downgraded the gym leaders in XY. Apart from Korrina and kinda Wulfric, they all have like five total lines of dialog and just stand in one place for the whole game.

Because they actually had jobs and lives outside the gym. I loved the NPCs n Gen V. They weren't really that fleshed out, but they sure as hell are more interesting than the characters from every other gen.

Come to think of it, why wasn't Marshal the new Champion? You'd think after Alder decided to retire, he'd trust his number one student as his successor instead of some random kid he barely knows. Plus, it would have been a good way to show how far Fighting has come since Gen 1.

Would also be a last hurrah for the type before Gen VI

To be honest, I didn't really like Iris. She just sort of comes out of nowhere, does fuckall in the story, and you kind of forget she exists after beating her. She's not even in the Champion Tournament. Also, her backstory was retconned for some reason. Originally she was going to be Drayden's successor when he retired/died. That's why he adopted her. The memory link however makes it seem like he adopted her to become the new Champion.

Gen II's biggest sin was only having one Dark type available before Kanto. You introduce a new type to nerf Psychics, and yet you can't get it until you already have a full team. Not to mention they're all lvl 20something, so you really have to grind it up to have it as part of your team.
