A buddy of mine gave me his old Pokémon Silver cart. Battery's dead, but I don't have the screwdriver to get into it. Any way to get in without wrecking the cartridge? Using pic related failed.

I've heard of some people taking a lighter the tip of a ballpoint pen to soften the plastic, then using it as a screwdriver. I haven't tried this, but it's probably worth a shot.

get a lighter and a mechanical pencil and take it apart until you get the plastic part where you put the led in and light the end of the stick until the plastic gets soft and after that press it onto the screw and it will mold to the shape of it

To be fair, Gameboy carts use a bizarre screw that appears literally nowhere else. You can't open it with any kind of normal human screwdriver.

That's not a Tri-wing. Those look like this and are used to seal up most modern Nintendo products. Like I said, what you've got there is some arcane factory screw that even Nintendo never used on anything else to my knowledge.

Anyone know the kind of battery to use on Yellow? I tried replacing them with a 2025 (I think) a while ago on both that and Crystal but only Crystal saves
Should I go for the 1616 or did I just mess up somewhere

There's no reason a 2025 wouldn't work. It might not be hitting the prongs correctly.

Got it off using the melted pencil thing. I can buy a 2025 and some more electrical tape this weekend, but now I just need to get these prongs off without breaking them.

I used a screwdriver really similar to that one to pry at the two points it's welded on at. Don't be afraid of bending them, because you likely will. Just don't do it to the point where it breaks or bends beyond repair.

You'll also need a soldering iron. You need to make sure the solder remains on there for when you replace the battery.

Solder is nice but not necessary, it's perfectly fine if you don't solder it back in, the cartridge itself should keep it in place.

This works pretty well actually. I replaced the battery in a copy of Silver I got at a pawn shop recently with that method.
