What rules do you use when nicknaming mons?

Mine are:
>must fit gender
>must refer to car stuff, favorite cartoon as a child, favorite game, or Hawaiian language/culture
>no cliches (ie. Hexcalibur the Aegislash)

I try to think of witty names that are better than the originals, which is pretty easy if you play the american versions of the games. some of the given names are horrendous

I don't really have any 'rules' when nicknaming, asides from what you mentioned about genders. It bugs my autism when if someone uses a female 'mon with a blatantly male name.

Anyways, a lot of my nicknames are from vidya or anime and manga. ;_;
A couple have just regular people names, though. Or they're named after planets. Others are just randomly thought up on the spot.

I'm thinking of nicknaming my competitive team. If I do, there will undoubtedly be a persistent theme - so no Trayvon the Scrafty unless I call my Togekiss Zim Zam.

I'm thinking of using shortened versions of their japanese names - some of these, such as Kino the Breloom, sound pretty good, but Togekiss' japanese name is Togekiss, so I might have to do something else.

Or maybe nothing.

While I do have the gender rule, it's usually somewhat random(although I do often name them after cartoon, anime, video game or TV show characters).

If I'm Masuda Method breeding for a shiny, but not worried about the gender of the species, I often pick names in advance for each to be prepared.

That's pretty much it. However there are a few Pokemon that I don't nickname like Hawlucha and Primeape, that I don't nickname because I like the name itself, though there are only a few of these in the entire national dex.

Everything I nickname must first pass one of these requirements:

Kokiri always felt like a more carefree and joyous name, and I liked the way it sounded.

Named by Umbreon and Espeon Kafei and Anju respectively because I used them as a pair in doubles matches like in Colosseum.
