Hey /vp/, with ORAS less than 3 months away now I've been thinking about my team for my first runthrough and have been considering Altaria. With it's new mega, do you think it will be more useful as a physical or special attacker?

>Known Physical Movepool:

DD (a must), Sky Attack, Return, Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush (Egg Move), Giga Impact

>Known Special Movepool

Hyper Voice (Egg Move), Dragon Pulse, Moonblast, Ice Beam, Hyper Beam, Solarbeam, Hidden Power, Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Dazzling Gleam, and Draco Meteor

>Possible with Tutors (or if transfered): Heat Wave, Iron Tail, Outrage, and last but not least Double-Edge.

More than likely this, but a pixilate physical set is interesting since most fairy moves are special as it stands.

Special has more coverage options and multi-target moves, Physical can boost and has higher-powered STAB. I'm kinda hoping it's Attack gets a bigger boost than Sp.Attack, they don't necessarily have to be even. A bulky Dragon Dance set with Return, Earthquake, and Roost would be pretty great. Like a mix between Dragonite and Clefable. If Special ends up better it will work best with Agility or cleric sets (Heal Bell is a tutor move, and quite nice).

Wait for ORAS to come out so you can verify stat boosts and new Egg moves, if any.

>chance of Extreme Speed from Togekiss or the Dratini family
>chance of Boomburst from Noivern, Chatot, and the Taillow family
As it is now, though, Physical DD for singles and Special for Doubles.

gen I didn't make sense and gamefreak doesn't really care about stuff making sense.
It might be helpful to remind yourself it's a videogame with a lot of flaws, continuity being a big one.

The offensive boosts are both big, they don't necessarily have to be equal. No matter what Altaria-M is going to have a pretty balanced stat spread combined with great typing, movepool, and ability. I'm looking forward to it.

Boomburst is the most likely out of those, and that's not saying much. Who knows though, GameFreak likes giving Megas powerful new toys.

I'm thinking something like this

Altaria @ altarite
Trait: pixilate
Naive [96 sp atk, 160 Atk, 252 spd] -If earthquake, [160 sp atk, 96 atk, 252 spd] - if fire blast
- dragon dance
- hyper voice
- earthquake/fire blast
- dragon claw/outrage

Dragon dance boosts altarias lackluster speed and good attack to obscene levels.
Hyper voice rips through everything with its intrinsic 33% pixilate+STAB boost. Hyper voice should be on any and all sets. Dragon+ground is a fantastic attacking type and hyper voice takes care of most who resist it such as togekiss. Dragon+fire is a slightly better attacking type. Basically with this moveset, you choose your checks and counters. Naive is the preferred nature so altaria can outspeed base 90 scarfs/+1 after a dragon dance, and also so you don't retract from hyper voice's damage.

Yeah. The original sticky mixed up Lopunny and Altaria's info. Said Lopunny got both offenses and Altaria got big Attack, turned out to be the latter.

I think I still prefer the power of Pixilate Return over Hyper Voice in a singles format. Having a boosting move outranks Substitute-passing in my opinion.

Why would Quick Attack be less likely than Boomburst? Most bird Pokemon already have access to that move, I was somewhat surprised to see that Swablu doesn't already have it.

Eww no. If you're using a Fairy move, Dragon is completely redundant coverage-wise especially since the Fairy move will always be stronger thanks to Pixilate.

It doesn't look like a particularly speedy beast in any of it's forms. It certainly could happen. Boomburst fits the sound-based theme of Altaria and would be along the lines of Heracross getting Rock Blast/Bullet Seed, Blastoise getting the Pulses, Lopunny getting HJK, and Ampharos getting Dragon Pulse. I don't think it will happen, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it did.

Also maybe Swablu will pick up some new level-up moves so it's not such dead weight before evolving. I know that's kind of the point, and I don't want it to be too easy-mode, but something would be nice. Maybe Disarming Voice or Twister. At least it learns Round now, which is thematically fitting and useful at that level.

Pinsir's had access to Quick Attack as an Egg move since Gen IV. The same is true of Bibarel.
And if Swablu were to pick up Extreme Speed, it would inherit it from a fat fuck like Togekiss or Dragonite. Now that I think about it, there's a bunch of Pokemon that get Priority moves in spite of looking like they'd struggle to outrun a spunky garden snail.

The reason I went mixed is so altaria hasthe ability to 2HKO/OHKO physical walls, which is HUGE right now for a DD sweeper. Too lazy to do calcs, but pokes like hippowdon, quagsire(a big problem for this set), mandibuzz, rotom-w are all 2HKO'd by hyper voice, while return misses the 2HKO at +1 and unboosted. I think double edge might be cool, but that forces you to run roost. Then you're walled by steels and fires depending on which move you dropped.

Really I'm just excited for ANY new toys Altaria picks up that could be useful. I've always loved the thing but there's never been any reason to use it competitively. The Mega made a lot of new fans but it also brought all of us silent admirers into the open since it was finally worth talking about beyond stories of Gen III bros, Nuzlockes, and the like.
