Two Questions:

1. How do you make your teams? Do you just copy-paste smogon sets, do you take pointers from smogon sets and bend it so it fits your needs, or do you get creative and come up with your own teams through research of a pokemon's capabilities?

2. What medium do you use to battle?

I check the dtats and movepool and serebii of Pokemon I like and try to cover as many weaknesses as possible along with some surprise gimmicks. Also favorite must always be on team

No but there good for beginners, also even if you don't use them you should check them to get an idea what other people are running.

Always take into account that smogon sets have no idea what other mons you're using so always have flexibility in sets.

This sounds good in theory but you have to have a deep understanding of the meta to make a team using this strategy that is viable without a gimmick.

Here is how I make a team.

-I choose team members such that I'm not particularly weak to one type. I try not to have more than 2 common weaknesses on a team, and I try to compensate for my weakest points.

-I'm kind of a karenfag, but I also like winning occasionally, so I at least pick decent Pokemon with some potential that I think would be fun. I also made up a strange rule that doesn't let me use any Pokemon that I've used in a previous game, which makes things unnecessarily difficult.

-I choose movesets for as much type coverage as possible. I literally make spreadsheets to do this. I want to make sure that my attacks aren't walled, that I have good neutral coverage on each Pokemon, and to tweak the movesets across the whole team to try to get as many super-effective moves as possible.

-Yeah, I look at Smogon, mostly to see if there are any possibilities I overlooked, or maybe to see what a recommended item or nature is (if it's not obviously e.g. Adamant).

Only if the smogon set is the only thing that pokemon can pull off.

Not often, but sometimes if I'm stumped I'll go see what the general consensus is on what that pokemon does best.

Sometimes, if I can make something that works out of what the pokemon's got then I will do this.
