Well dark, dragon and fairy (and steel I guess) are the coolest subtypes I guess, thematically. They make for interesting designs/concepts.

Well it isnt about LOOKING like a dragon or Ampharos never would have become one. There has to be the potential to be one. Charizard is obvious and a pun is enough for Ampharos, but there IS reason to the choices.

Something like electric/dark Luxray has no logic besides BUT IMAGINE THE STAB CRUNCH

If anything Mega Dragonite should become Dragon/Water, Mega Noivern should become Flying/Normal, Mega Gliscor Ground/Poison

Thing is, Dragon/Water would be really good on Dragonite, especially if it kept Multiscale. It loses those nasty Ice and Rock weaknesses and gains a slew of secondary STABs that it might actually use, like Aqua Jet and Waterfall. It also becomes that much better on Rain teams.

Point taken. However, Luxray is a Pokemon who hangs in the balance and some flavour text from any upcoming games could change that. Creatures with its kind of body type and general expressions can be made ruthless and evil very easily unless stated otherwise, like Arcanine for instance.

Scyther looks more like a dinosaur than a bug. Western dragons tend to resemble winged dinosaurs. And there's like a dozen other Bug/Flying types around. It would've been fun to see something different for Scyther.
Obviously it's too late to change it now, but Bug/Dragon Dual Chop Eviolite Technician Scyther would've been fun.

That's like saying Ice is associated with light because of Aurora Beam. Dark Pulse is about weaponizing dirty thoughts and Dark Void is a sig for a dark type that's clearly meant to go with Bad Dreams. Dark is the "evil" type, plain and simple.

Dragon has to be the least defined typing. Latias, Garchomp, Goodra, Haxorus, Dialga, and Kingdra are all dragons for some reason or another.

My point is that most types don't have a single, quintessential inspiration that all members must strive to approximate. There are hundreds, if not thousands of unique variants on the idea of a "dragon" or a "fairy", why should Game Freak only stick to the ones you like best?

I never said this. Auroras are associated with the cold i.e. Northern Lights(not actual rainbows, it says rainbow-colored). North as in where it's cold.

because language doesnt work equally in all cases of substituted words? language isnt that simple. Example: Rainbow-COLORED does not a rainbow make; DARK=NO LIGHT is correct while ICE=LIGHT is nonsense
