(I know this method existed in Gen 4, because I was trading with someone else who had shitty internet and it cloned my shitty Flareon, and my memory is really fuzzy... However I think it worked like that in Gen 2 because I -think- you shut it off when saving to switch between boxes. So even back then.)
Well, for any game really. It's a safety measure for data loss, and it works in virtually all games like this. (Animal Crossing comes to mind) It's not something they can patch because it's an intended feature to prevent data loss when you suddenly cut off the power when saving.
