Yellow Gengar is best Gengar. Yellow in general was underrated in terms of sprites, IMO.

Raikou has a lot of cool sprites so this one is tough but I thoroughly enjoyed its Crystal sprite, though Gen 3 were great too

Yellow does have some pretty good sprites, though the color on some of them seem off. I also wish they'd change the backsprites, they're the same ugly ones from Red/Green.

yep, I forgot about the backsprites until I went to look for the Gengar sprite on Bulbapedia and remembered how disappointing that was.

Yellow simultaneously held the best and worst Gengar sprite

Steelix's RSE and DPP sprites were the best, the GSC one was decent. After that all the other later sprites and XY's 3D model just had something that looked off. It just doesn't look nearly as cool or intimidating. Maybe it's the shape of the head, the eyes or the angle.
