Gyarados is great at stopping Charizard Y, since the best thing Charizard cad do against it is a neutral Solar Beam, while Gyarados still has STAB water (hits neutrally, but still deals big damages) and can Twave him.

The reducing berries are nice, but Talonflame is weak to water, rock and electric anyway, all of them very common offensive types.
Sand is not a big issue, since if you're against sand you're against a Tyranitar, which can kill you easily, nobody uses hail and the best used of Snow Warning is super weak to both stabs and for Fake Outs you still have Quick Guard.
The main issue I found with Focus Sash is it's shit synergy with Talonflame's best attacking moves, since both of them have recoil, however, setting Tailwing on turn 1, breaking the sash and then killing yourself with recoil for a free switch is a nice suicide combo.
