I'd equate it with asking which character you want to play as while not completely breaking the fourth wall; that's basically what they're doing, after all. Shouldn't take it so personally. I personally have played as both sexes; depends on which design I like the most, doesn't mean anyone should get "offended" unless they see something like Nate's hair.
