To be honest, it isn't exactly as bad as the others but it's not that great either. It's more or less a problem with rock type pokemon rather than the typing itself. Rock is a great offense but we don't have many pokemon that could use it's STAB correctly.

Also there's the issue with rock accurancy. Being great at offense is not really useful when most of your attacks have shity accurancy and basically all earth type can learn those attacks anyways.

because types don't exist in a fucking vacuum. pokemon also have moves, stats and abilities which are balanced against their types when they are being designed. also, pokemon are not balanced 1 to 1, you have a team consisting of 3 to 6 pokemon to support each other.

this notion that all types should have equal type matchups is fucking stupid. having more or less weaknesses is a balancing factor in many cases. according to your guys logic, pokemon like swampert or eelektross should be top tier because they have almost no weaknesses.

Half of those resistances are commonly resisted types (bug, grass and steel). It resists itself so that basically leaves ice and fairy.
On the other hand it's weak to common attacking types (rock ground and water) and is weak to the most common entry hazard in the game. So I'd say its pretty balanced

Grass types are meant as an "Easy to play but hard to master" type having the beginning gyms being weak to grass or have grass resist it.
Fire is meant to be the hard to master but it works type having the first few gyms punish you but the later gyms giving you a free ride
Water is the easy to use but doesn't progress much outside of that.

The later games seem to hold a more
Grass type - Hard mode
Fire type - Normal mode
Water - Easy mode

I never really understood that since it really only applies if you plan on using your starter for everything. You can just catch pokemon you want in the wild to hard counter most gyms especially in later games.

Its weak to something, immune to and useless against another and resisted by two types, so its hardly the "neutral type"; it would have to fill in the criteria in the above greentext and lose a resistance if it was to be the most basic type. Right now its mostly a hindrance for any pokemon to have immunity to the barely used Ghost type moves is not worth it

So the last trio of starters had two type triangles: grass > water > fire, and dark > psychic > fighting. what other trio could we do?

grass/fairy > water/fighting > fire/steel
grass/ground > water/rock > fire/ice (dem 4x)
