I=easy team building
II=bug fixes and less fuck up of movepool
III=the vast region with a lot of exploration and secrets
IV=the physical-special split and the difficulty of platinum
V=movepools fixed, everything is more balanced and the sprites finally move
VI=you can customize your trainer, and walk diagonally

The only thing I enjoyed about X and Y were the introduction of tag battles and the updated graphics. Everything else was pretty shit. Go be 12 somewhere else.

I thought the massive inclusion of so many pokemon was an awful idea and failed to make kalos its own memorable region. instead we got a melting pot of gens 1-5 with a pitiful amount of new pokemon. even the environment is a bland conglomeration of different extremes that don't even make sense together, i.e. a bit of desert here, some snow there, a swamp up there, etc.

oh man this one really bothered me too

Kalos didn't feel like you were exploring a world.
Kalos felt like you were playing levels in a video game.

The routes all seemed so disconnected from each other. There was no attempt at all to give the region any sort of coherent, flowing geography. It's just a bunch of random shit stuck wherever GF felt like sticking it. Forest here, swamp here, beaches here and there, whatever.

With the Gen 1 reboot being a GBA game, and new DS's no longer supporting transfer. They would have to have made the Gen 1 starters and Legends made available legitimately somehow eventually. Easier to explain in the new region than in the Gen 3 reboot.

There are some legitimate criticisms, but an annoyance that has persisted since R/B/Y is not really one of them. And, really, in older games, you could start a new game, yeah...but what good is that if you can't save it? You're really just gonna leave the GB/GBA/DS on all the time to keep the file in play? What if you want to transfer 'Mons over, assuming you complete it, which requires saving?

I've thought of this, too. I actually did a Kalos-only run on my first game, but seeing a SHITLOAD of all the other old mons took the sense of discovery ad uniqueness away. I'm happy I was able to catch my favorite mons from last gen, but for them to be present and overwhelmed the pitiful 70 new Kalos mons was too much. My first encounter was a Pidgey, ffs.

Truer words have never been spoken. The Mountain Kalos was the worst offender. I thought by Dendemille the introduction of "cold" areas was nice because it starts off only as frosty breath, but the swamp before Snowbelle really ruined it. I know the explanation for Snowbelle is that the gym is causing the snow, but still. Ice and snow to the North/Northwest and South and you get a swamp in the middle?

They also cheaped out and teased us on Rhyhorn racing, the other Power Plant gates, animations for the Coumarine Rail, etc.

That it was, but really, I just thought X and Y were hearkening back to the Gen I progression of events, for better or for worse. Nothing massive in scale like Gen II/the Gen IV remakes, or nothing with a tangible story to it like Gen V. You get Pokemon, you beat gyms, you stop an evildoer and all that business, simple stuff.

Then we get Viridian Forest, teased with Rhyhorn races, the first gym and then nothing. The only thing that truly felt like Kalos was Lumiose city. Although why in the fuck did they not add a separate entrance to go to the top of the tower and see Lumiose as a whole?

Even the Carnac Stone equivalents on the west ("Stonehenge" equivalents for uncultured swines) ended up pretty boring and lame.

The Tower of Mastery is tainted by my extreme dislike for Lucario and its mega (FUCK YOU Korrina, for forcing me to do that!), and mega-evolutions in general.

Dendemille had ONE windmill whoopdedoo, and it lets you change angles to see the camera better all in three pixel units!! Isn't it exciting?

The thing I hate most about Kalos is the lack of memorable areas and music. They're nice, but I don't come back as often as other regions. It really is like France, beautiful yet generic. The only city I visit for the music is Coumarine and the only interesting sight is the mega evo tower. If they'd made better camera angles for the other areas then I'd probably go back to Laverre and Anistar. I really hope they somewhat improve on Kalos because with ORAS coming out it'll lose everything that makes it special. I could talk more about what makes xy good and bad but I don't think /vp/ is the right place to do so.

While not the worst [That goes to Gen 2 and Jhoto] Kalos/Gen 6 has some major issues:

- Boss battles are too easy [Many trainer battles are harder]

The gap between 4~6 is the most blatent; it's almost a boss rush.

The tracks are great, but not memorable. There was a thread a while ago with people saying this. And I never cared for Snowbelle I prefer relaxing music for background noise and Coumarine is the only easy to access theme like that in the games.

It was cute and all, and yes, it was a shame that it wasn't included in B/W or B/W2, but in X/Y it would have seriously slowed down the game.

Plus they would have had to make around 800+ low-poly models of the pokemon (including formes and certain gender differences) for it to work in the overworld which already slowed down far too much in parts especially when there were too many elements on-screen at a time - even causing a game breaking bug when saving in Lumiose if you recall.

Just treat it as a unique element to that particular set of games that will never return - like Poketch Apps in D/P/Pt or Dream World.

The route disconnects where the most annoying issues for me too. So wrong I don't even have a word for it. Small regional 'dexes lead to ridiculous game design - look at Phoebe and Glacia in Gen III or Flint in Diamond and Pearl, and then compare with how diverse every trainer's team is in Gen VI despite having fewer Pokémon per team on average.

They are 'story-driven' in that there is a bunch of things that happen to form something resembling a plot that is generally plain and not really memorable.

The one exception to that is BW, as the games that actually tried to make their story worth something.

That's an issue more to do with type distribution more than anything though - D/P was awash in Grass, Bug, Rock and Fighting types, and not nearly enough Ice for a colder region - also needed more than just Ponyta as a choice for a fire type mon.

Platinum and B/W had plenty diversity in its mons and trainer mon choices - and they did it without having over 400 mons in their dex.

As someone who started playing in Gen I and has played at least some of every gen since, I quite like X and Y. Story's dumb, but it's a goddamn pokemon game story, who gives a fuck. I like trainer customization even in it's limited state, and Kalos as a whole is a pretty interesting place. Having been to Paris I think Lumiose City is a good likeness.

Of course, Pokemon fans get all wrapped up in their favorite gen and hate every other, so I'm not surprised some people hate Gen 6. From Genwunners who love the glitchy, broken-ass original games, to Gen 5ers who slobber all over N's knob, everyone settles into their little tribe.

People get way too obsessed over these cute virtual cockfighting games.

All right, it's this thread again. I swear I just made a post like this one twelve hours ago.

X and Y introduced a lot of amazing features. Pokémon-Amie is awesome and adds a whole nother layer of depth to a pokémon that ordinary gameplay just can't achieve. The games look absolutely gorgeous - after all, this is Pokémon we're talking about. Horde battles are fun, usually. The PSS puts a focus on online interactions, which provides more postgame content than some shitty extra storyline. However, the Looker quest is really good, too.

Unfortunately, adding a few cool features does not save X and Y from being shitty games.

Do you remember Parfum Palace? The place where you had to capture the guy's dog, and your reward is a fucking fireworks show? Was that FUN? When you walked out of there, were you thinking "Gee, I sure do hope I can catch someone else's dog again sometime?" No, you thought "Ah, thank fuck THAT'S over." Because it wasn't fun, and there wasn't even a decent reward. It was just Game Freak masturbatorily taking you on a tour of France for the sole purpose of having enough cutscenes to make a trailer for E3.

Now, think back to your first visit to Lumiose City. Take five steps. Dexio and Sina hold your hands and walk you to the lab. Take five steps, you're told to go to the third floor. Take five steps, cutscene with Sycamore. Have a pokémon battle, cutscene with everyone. Go down to the first floor, cutscene with Lysandre. Take five steps, cutscene with everyone. Take five steps, cutscene with Trevor and Tierno. Go to the café, cutscene with Serena. Try to leave the city, cutscene with Tierno, cutscene with Mr. Bonding, cutscene with Korrina, cutscene with Trevor and Tierno again how much FUCKING dialogue do you need to wade through in order to play the goddamn game?

It'd be one thing if this dialogue was used to make the story better. But it isn't. No, the fact that it's for kids does NOT justify it. Comment too long, will continue in another.

People often laugh when someone mentions the importance of story in a Pokèmon game.

But I really do think that all the small storylines are what make the games more than just simple RPG's.

And I am not really talking about the basic "stop the bad guys" plotline you encounter in each game (except for B&W/2 that shit was awesome)

I am talking about how all the little details in the regions and all the people you encounter, actually give you a feeling of a fleshed out world which makes exploring this world so much more fun.

Be it the weather station in Hoen, the Pokémon Tower in Kanto, the ruins in Unova or the Hotel Grand Lake in Sinnoh.
They all fit into the region and are important to give it its unique "feel" and give you a look at its backstory.

What I've always loved about the Pokemon games was exploring the new region I was given with a new team of Pokèmon that would grow closer to my heart with each new discovery I make in that world.

What was great as well were how the legendaries were incoorparated into the lore of the region, and often you would find (often falls) rumors about these legendaries till you finally encounter them.

When I found Mewtwo in Blue after all the build up on Cinnabar Island I really was scared shitless.
After hearing about the Regi-trio and trying for days to solve the riddle that would "unlock" them, I did feel like the greatest explorer when I really did encounter them. It all made it seem like these giant monsters really were part of this vast world and I was just a boy with his Pokèmon trying to find out as much about it as I could.

And it was great.

Now Kalos....Xerneas and Ylvetal seemed like they could've gotten some of the greatest backstory and build up ever seeing as they are based on "life" and "destruction". When I first saw these two I couldnt wait to walk into a magical forest to encounter Xerneas or climbing a giant mountain just so I could face Ylveatal. (will continue)

I think BW2 nailed it between new and old mons. It was a lot of fun seeing some unexpected and unusual earlygame choices (magby, elekid, magnemite, koffing, and sunkern come to mind) that cohered perfectly to the environments they appeared in, and not just added in because they could be. Really made the environments come to life without offsetting the gen V balance.

Seriously, remember the hype when the new pokemon and features were beginning to leak into vp? kalos was looking to be GOAT. And then it turned into the gen that, amazingly, almost everyone here agrees is the worst in the series, a feat no other gen has accomplished.

The whle thing really had no soul at all and while there were some fun concepts (The Power Plant and the magical firest could've been really great if they had lasted for more than...7 minutes) but they are just poorly executed and just come and dissapear out of nowhere as if they were all just "levels" instead of part of a region.

The only thing I actually really liked was Luminouse city. Great soundtrack and great execution of the "Pokè-paris" concept. Also it finally gave me the "holy shit this city is HUGE" feel I wanted from Castelia City.

So yeah those are the complaints I have abuot the region. I do have a lot of complaints about other stuff in the games but the region really bothered me the most.

I only hope that in Gen 7 I'll be able to regain that feeling of exploration they somehow left out this time.

All the dialogue in the game is there for the sole purpose of telling the player what to do. Is that fun? Did you ENJOY being told what to do? Did you enjoy being told how to do it? Did you enjoy being told to go to Frost Cavern when you were already headed in that direction anyway? Do you think you wouldn't have been able to figure out Horde Battles if Trevor hadn't told you about them? Stop underestimating children. Just because they can't draw or dance or form their own political opinions, GF assumes they can't learn how to do something on their own. Which is ironic, because that's how they learned how to battle pokémon back in Aquacorde Town!

And all the words that aren't telling you what you can do are spent telling you what you CAN'T do! You can't access route 16 until you can access route 15. Why? LITERALLY NO REASON. Approaching from the Lumiose side, you already can't get very far because there's a Strength boulder that can only be pushed the other way. But no, GF thinks that we have to do all the routes EEN ZE DEZEEGNATED ORDER. Is that why Minecraft is fun? Kids love Minecraft, and its idea of a tutorial is a series of vaguely worded achievements, the existence of which you might not even notice! And kids fucking love it!

Why do I have to go through Glittering Cave BEFORE I challenge Grant? Why do I have to challenge Grant before I go through Reflection Cave? Why the hell is there someone east of Shalour City who tells me to go talk to Korrina again? I already can't go forward without Surf! Do you think I fucking forgot about Korrina?

"It's for kids" isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card that excuses the degree to which X and Y railroad the player. I don't blame you for eating GF's shit, but stop thanking them for the privilege to do so.

It would take two fucking minutes to make it look like there was an actual power outage behind them, but GF couldn't even be assed to do that. It had over 3 years to develop the game, and they couldn't take a couple of minutes to do something as simple as that.

It is a game that made me restore faith into GSC and HG/SS solely because of how devoid of content there was. It is a game that didn't bring much new to the table, and what little there is that is new ingame is sadly lacking. It is a game that relies solely on past successes, mainly Kanto and Hoenn's due to how much pandering there is for the former in the game. It is a game that does not make me feel like I'm on an adventure, and more a badly written official fanfiction about France. It is a game that feels badly implemented in everywhere but the singles gameplay, and that will come to a screeching halt as the horde encounters shows up to utterly DESTROY any coherent speed of the game.

It is a game that offers too little for too much of your time. It is a game that story makes you feel like you are only playing a bad novel about characters that are currently off-putting in the Universe of Pokemon. It is a game that only deserves to be played once until GameFreak decides 'oh no, we have fucked up, maybe we shouldn't wait until the sequel for this kind of thing' to add more polish to a game that nearly bricked your progress twice; one with the Lumiose save glitch, and the other with trading errors out of the asshole, enough for GameFreak to say 'we don't have plans to patch it', to patch it up to Version 1.2.

It is a game that is, as a whole, unacceptable.

Well said. There's really no sense of achievement in an XY playthrough as far as exploring goes. I remember playing through Gold as a kid and being freaked out when I wandered into the ruins of alph because I felt like I was trespassing. No one told me to go there or not to go, I just found it and that felt like an adventure. I'm not pandering to gen 2, it's just an example that comes to mind.

Where X/Y fucked up:

1. Frame rate dips.

2. Almost zero post-game.

3. Borrowed too much from the previous gens. Don't get me wrong, I liked being able to use the Kanto starters again, but relying on Kanto legendaries for the post-game was fucking lazy.

4. Pokemon games are never hard but X/Y cranked the easiness way up. Very few trainers have more than three Pokemon, and then consider all the ways to make the game even easier (Amie, EXP share, all the handouts) and it just gets ridiculous.

5. The Gen 6 Pokemon. Only about 70 of them. I would have been okay with that if these mons were good, because hey quantity over quality, but the only mons that are really noteworthy are Greninja, Aegislash, Talonflame, Mewostic, and Sylveon. To make matters worse there are quite a few mons with really cool concepts (Heliolisk, Aurorus, Delphox) that just turn out to be shit because GF fucked up the balance.

6. Awful pacing. Like 70% of the game happens inbetween the first two gyms and then you rapid-fire through the rest.

7. Linear as all hell but to be fair that applies to any Pokemon game after Gen 3, which itself was already a step backwards from Gen 2's nonlinearity.

8. While I like the idea behind the Fairy-type GF just fucked up the execution. They were trying to give more reason to use poisons and offensive steels, but they forgot to address their other flaws so instead we're left with Fairy being one of the best types in the game. Mark my words, next gen or the one after that Fairy will become just as OP as Dragon and people will be begging for a new type to nerf that.

And to be fair I'll point out where X/Y didn't fuck up:

1. Mega-evolutions were a pretty good idea, albeit with mixed execution. The biggest problem is that you can only have 1 mega per team; this pretty much guarantees that only the best of the best megas will be used, leaving out more niche ones like Mega-Ampharos or Mega-Houndoom. Those mons should have either been regular evos or just remove the cap on megas. Overall though I'd like to see it stay.

2. Breeding is a lot easier to do now but it's still a pretty shit mechanic. But hey, progress is progress.

3. Customization is good if you're a girl.

4. There are nice little details in the game, like your friends giving you a nickname, your model kneeling to talk to small characters, balls being passed down, stuff like that.

Not even going to mention the plot since no Pokemon game has a remotely decent plot besides BW1.

They happen with larger scale pokemon. In hordes, pokemon like Scyther and Trevenant will cause the frame rate to drop. It drops all the time with 3d on.

Well, I had the EXP Share on, and before you stop reading, here's why.

I obtained the game at midnight at launch. Within the first hour or so of gameplay I was given this key item which spreads EXP to my entire party. So naturally, I figured in the first Pokemon Game to give EXP for catching a Pokemon, there might be a need for all this additional EXP, maybe the region that is so big that it needed to split the Pokedex into three parts ends up with really high levels. It wasn't until I absolutely crushed Korrina that I realised I had made a mistake and by that point, it was too late. The damage had been done.

73 Kalos Mons + 28 evolutions of older gen Pokemon for a total of ... 101 Pokemon. GSC are the only gen to give less with exactly 1 fewer Pokemon. However, 3 'mons have not been distributed internationally and 2 have not been officially revealed yet and may not before ORAS' release, so that reduces the number below Gen 2's 100 baseline.
It all depends on how you cut the cake. If you include ORAS Megas/Primals, we stand to get a dex roughly the size of Gen3

LISTEN YOU FUCKS. X and y is bad. Its stupid easy with reusable tms, the trainers are retarted, 3/10 gyms, and the elite four was the easiest i have ever faced. HOWEVER, graphics are gorgeous, i like the sound tracks, battle scene are fantastic, online play is extremly fun, and this is the most competitive pokemon game so far IMO.
