Pokemon characters are just as important as the Pokemon. Red is the most iconic trainer in the games, he's the most obvious choice

I feel like the only way you'd get another trainer is if they commanded multiple pokemon like Red did, but that's not going to happen because they don't want form changing characters anymore
IE, give it up, these are strong independent pokemon who don't need no trainer

Fox doesn't just fly arwings though. As opposed to pokemon trainers, which only really... train pokemon. Unless we're talking someone like Bruno, or Marshal. But no one's gonna want them as playable characters over protags.

The Trainer is in on a technicality. They dropped the switching function that some characters had so players could focus on a single moveset. So you'll have to take it up with the big guy if you miss Squirtle and Ivysaur.
