For me, they were a quick way to make nearly anything just viable enough to fuck around with. One of my favorite items in the entire series for sure. Thoughts?

I never understood why someone would pick the gems over using a plate.

Aside from normal gem + fake out on unburden mons and flying gem acrobatics, they're almost all gimmicky crap that relies entirely on surprise and, with the exception of the two I mentioned, you're usually better off using another item

plates give 20% more damage on corresponding type move power and gems gave 50%, really good for battle subway where they don't get wasted and pokes with unburden, but now that they are 30%, pretty much useless

I previously used Grass Gem Giga Drain Yanmega in gen 5 OU to some success.
Gimmicky, but it worked occasionally.

Now that people can hack X and Y in Japan, do we know if damage is still calculated so it checks for having an item after the item is used? Acrobatics Fly Gem is kind of useless if it checks for item before using the item.
