Hello, /vp/! I know this is really late, but I got Pokemon X (Understand that I stopped playing Pokemon for a while and didn't get it). As I was playing, I was wondering about what you guys thought about Fairy Types. I heard they were a tad bit overpowered. What do you guys say on the matter?

Terribly implemented, a failure at nerfing Dragons, only hurt other Types which were better like they were in Gen 5 or needed a buff of some sort, like Dark for the former, and Bug for the latter.

These. Rushed and overall unnecessary addition. Dragon type wasn't the problem, Pokemon like Garchomp were.

Only the type is. Most of the stuff that have it don't have the stats you'll call OP. Xerneas and MegaMawile are monsters though.

type is not just a collection of advantages and disadvantages, it's a concept. if garchomp was the problem, than the concept of dragons was the problem.

I think he means how Dragons were conceptually made to be these massive top-tier Pokemon, that the type wasn't as broken as the fact that every dragon under the sun bar a very select few were sitting at 580+ BST.

He is saying that types carry aesthetic, Fairy are more than just some type match ups, they carry the mythology of the fey.
if you took the fairy type, kept the match ups, thru out the name, and came up with a new name and aesthetics it would radically change the type, despite not changing how it interacts with other types.

Pokemon is terribly balanced to begin with, and Fairy really didn't have much of an impact on anything except Hydreigon is not so good anymore and less people run Outrage. With Knock Off and the Steel nerf most Dark types are actually better off this gen since Steel types are way more common than Fairies, and a lot of Fighting types are better off with Knock Off as well since old Psychic and Ghost checks are not as effective anymore. The bug resist is unnecessary but all the good bugs have a secondary STAB anyway (some don't even run their bug STAB on their most common sets.)

The typing on paper is overpowered bu Mega Mawile is really the only exceptionally OP one, well along with Xerneas but Xerneas isn't allowed anywhere anyways. After that there's mostly just Azumarill who is freaking incredible but not OP

Fairy was a bad idea because Dragons with a Life Orb or a Choice item carrying Outrage or Draco Meteor was balanced in Gen 2+ because of the Steel type.
