The only 'hard' gym leaders are Giovanni, Whitney, Tate & Liza and Lenora. Literally every other one is a pushover.

I always think it's silly that there's a power progression in the gyms. Obviously it's there for gameplay purposes, but it's still retarded that you can be a gym leader with a level 7 Pidgey. What if somebody didn't grew up in that hick city with 4 houses like you?

Hardest gyms when doing a nuzlocke are probably Platinum's or BW2 Challenge mode.

HGSS gyms would be up there as well if the level curve wasn't turd soup.

Hardest gym for me has to be Tate and Liza in Ruby. I was pretty shit at doubles (still am), and didn't have good offensive moves for their Pokes, not knowing what types they were didn't help either.

The Gym Leaders in Kalos (X/Y) were as difficult as any (Ace) Trainer encountered in-game. Why did they make Pokémon even-easier-babbi-modo? Why not have a Professor or a pre-Gen VI Kalos-visiting Scientist upgrade our Exp. Share AFTER we enter the Hall of Fame? Hope Exp. Share gets back it's pre-Gen VI effect, and can be upgraded to it's Gen VI form post-E4 in ORAS!

That's what ruin pokemon games for me.
If only it was an open world thing where you can face stuff that one shot you occasionaly, would make the game much more interesting. People would have strategies on where to go first, what to capture first, which gym to try first, and so on.
Also, randomly generated trainers would probably make the game harder at times and provide it with a better life.

But hey, it's a kid game, so yeah.

I had problems with Elesa, both in Black and Black 2.

Aside from that, most of them were fine. I hear people often had trouble with Juan from Emerald and his Kingdra, though.

I thought about stuff like that as well, but more to have an alternative to NPCs blocking the road. But the problem with that is, if you can cheese these pokemon in some manner, you'll get overpowered really fast.

I usually do an underleveled (even by skipping all the possibly skippable trainers, it's a pain to backtrack post E4 though) run at first so more or less a good chunk of the gym leaders will give me problems. That doesn't apply to XY where everything was still piss easy (maybe the first leader surprised me a bit but nothing special)

The only hard gym leader if you have decent team building skills is Whitney because of Miltank + you have to go out of your way to get a fighting-type at that point, and even then that Pokemon could get fucked over if Clefairy gets lucky with Metronome.

Though I do admit to getting fucked over by Jasmine in my last playthrough of Gen 2, but that was because I didn't have a ground-type, I had a "no healing items in battle" rule, and my Growlithe was too weak to kill Steelix after dealing with her Magnemite. I ended up putting the Rain Dance TM on Chinchou so it would have enough power to OHKO the Steelix. Good times.

However i laugh at people saying that gym leaders having more than three Pokémon makes them more difficult.
These same people think a gym leader 8 having a Luvdisc and/or an unevolved Pokémon actually present more of a challenge.
Wulfric's Cryogonal alone is enough to defeat Giovanni by itself, even without counting it being ice type, his team had terrible special defense. On top of having a Rhyhorn instead of another ground type like Golem.
Wallace had a goddamn Luvdisc and a Sealeo instead of, i don't know, Sharpedo or Wailord.

Any gym leader from the 3rd gym onwards really should have a full set of 6 pokemon.

I also feel items should be banned in matches. It is annoying when a leader uses them, and the player can stock up on 100's of them if they want, which is just cheating.

Using them outside of battle to recover for the next match is fine though.

Gym leaders should also have weather conditions which help them out as well.

The stadium games had the better gym leader battles.

I always felt the gym leader were not just there to fight you but to help you learn. Like really Brock has a full level 50+ team but he sees the newbie come along with 3 level 10~ pokemon and no badges. So he pulls out his 'lite' team to help the new trainer learn.

In the expanded media they try to explain this as Gym leaders not being designed to win but to test, and therefor they pick pokemon based on how they perceive the trainer before them. If you seem weak, they pick weak or less pokemon.

Which is stupid because the games don't reflect this with gyms that change pokemon or levels based on the level of the challenger's team.

They SHOULD have an open world pokemon where gym leaders evaluate your team before choosing pokemon! Also gyms should have more diverse themes than types. Where is my circular-footprint gym? Okay maybe that example is too specific.
