While I thoroughly enjoyed X/Y, I felt it was really lacking narrative to drive the player.
The rivals were horribly characterized and basic, so there was no real drive to be better than them.
The enemy team was boring and had no motives of their own apart from a story shoehorned after badge 7.
The gym leaders were barely given characterization at all. Korrina and Wulfric were great, but they had more dialog than all of the other gym leaders combined. Apart from it being tradition, I didn't feel compelled to really get the badges.
The routes are linear and very samey, leading to no motivation to explore apart from trying to solve boulder puzzles to get TMs.
The only thing that drives me forward is battling with a unique team from a choice of a good 450 Pokemon. With Amie and a team that felt more personal since I personally chose them out of 450 possibilities, I just wanted to go places with my team, no matter how boring the places were.
At the very least, Victory Road didn't require 5 HMs to get through.
