Guys, guys. Instead of hating on Charizard or Lucario, shouldn't we be grateful that Game Freak finally recognizes that not everyone worships their shitty ashnime mascot electric mouse?

It's definitely the most popular with kids and casual audiences, who probably outnumber the fanboys/gamers, but GF does recognize that fanboys/gamers are a thing and that Pikachu isn't their favorite.

Kinda like how Mario is the most popular video game character of all, but Link is the most popular with fanboys/gamers and wins all their popularity polls just like Charizard does (sorry, /vp/).

Look, to sum it up:

Pokémon:
Pikachu is the most popular of all, especially with casuals and kids.
Charizard is the most popular of all with gamers and adult nerds.
GF knows that gamers and adult nerds are a thing, and has therefore started producing more material without Pikachu (or relegating it to a cameo role).

Nintendo/gaming in general:
Mario is the most popular character of all, especially with casuals and kids.
Link is the most popular character of all with gamers and adult nerds.
Nintendo knows that gamers and adult nerds are a thing, and therefore put Link front and center on the SSB 3DS artwork, and they had a Legend of Zelda concert tour with no Mario one in sight.

Not saying OP is right but I do think it's weird how Pikachu didn't get a mega. I mean I know it'd be weird for a non-fully evolved mon to get a mega but you could very well say it'd be weird for a mon to get two megas, but look at Charizard and Mewtwo.

Either way I'm not really a Pikachu fanboy so I don't care whether or not GF puts slightly less focus on it than usual. Pic related, I'm a Raichu hipster.

I actually agree with everything you're saying, except for the "Nintendo doesn't give a hoot about" part. That was indeed the case during the Dark Ages of Wii Sports and Wii Fit, but today an announcement just came up about Miyamoto wanting to return Nintendo to its core-gamer roots.
