Here's how I can see the zoning on ORAS.
Red is a zone that is confirmed with "gates" (caves or forests) in RSE, or shown on the new map. Blue is used to show the links and potential gates used in RSE (i.e. Rusturf tunnel, Petalburg forest) and the new gates in Mauville.
Orange is a boundary I think will be used - with pink to show where I think new gates will be added (includes gates like ones outside Lumiose, and into Geosenge).

From what I can see from the map, New Mauville still exists in the remakes. In fact, it actually looks like a facility now instead of a Power Plant stuck in a cave.

The "turn off the machine" sidequest is probably going to get retconned into a "fix the machine" sidequest, which will subsequently turn New Mauville into the Mt. Coronet/Chargestone Cave/Kalos Route 13 of Hoenn.

There's probably going to be some dynamic camerawork on Mt. Chimney. I imagine walking onto the summit from Jagged Pass will involve a neat pan to the volcano's crater when you don't have the Men That Dance For No Reason in the way, like what happens as you walk from Victory Road to the Pokemon League in Kalos.

gates are cancer and if Gamefreak can't make a decent 3D world without gates then they should stick with 2D maps until Nintendo makes a machine powerful enough to run a route town along with the routes/towns next to it all at the same time

The walls of Mauville aren't really comparable to the Ice of BW2, one is centered on a single fairly unimportant city, the other covered half the continent.

It's a region.

And yes I know what you mean by the difference, but those walls can simply be something to guard the city from Team Magma/Aqua and when the story reaches a certain point, Wattson presses some button that lowers the walls to ground level - something like a convertible city. You can't question the technology these days, even less in a Pokemon game.

I know this, but can this be done with pokemon? The maps weren't even designed to have the area of some of the cities and locations built in. The scale is all wrong. As far as I know, it's still acceptable to have the interior of something be a separate map, such a building or a dungeon. It can be done that there is no transition between an interior and the overworld, but I am uncertain if I've seen this done on a handheld.
