A thread or so ago I made a small poll for some people to decide one of my concepts they liked. It seemed the unanimous vote went to a mon called Terroprey.

Since I cannot draw, i've got some references as well as the basic parts which should be incorporated in its design. If you want to take some artistic liberties be my guest.

There was talk of a fairy/water black swan pokemon last thread if I recall. If we're not using the toku theme with the starters, I think it would be a good starter. If we are, then it would be fine as a non-starter.

Gave it a try. Made the ears kind of shaped like antlers but not too much. Also just gave it general fur markings that look like bones and ribs and tufts of fur around the face that look like the teeth of the skull. I guess the body could have maybe been longer and the face didn't end up very batlike

The ideas I had were that the bat's ears are like flower pigtail things and one of the crab's claws is really long and acts as a sword

We didn't really have a theme before that except lifesaver platypus.... I think one of the problems is that Australia doesn't really "have" a culture. It's just random shit we've collected from other countries.

Australians do kinda have a weird love of wacky Japanese stuff though (Shintaro was huge in the 60s), so I think it's okay.

I was saying that the GF pokemon with 'unfitting' genders are pretty much universally hated. Yeah, they exist, but I'd rather have people enjoy the game than feel like something is out of place.

I just had an idea. What if instead of a crab, it was more of a lobster/prawn creature? Seems like it would be easier to make more humanlike/buglike that way. well we already have a pokemon based on a stomach (gulpin) and I've seen plenty of fakemon based off brains and hearts. So why not?

I'd also like to suggest a pokemon based off the human spine. ghost line (maybe part ground?). begins snake-like in appearance and evolves into lizard-like pokemon with the ribs resembling its legs. learns bonemarang.

Well I am not actually sure if there were bigger more ferocious sea creatures( which I am sure there were), Sharks are well known and feared among humans and since the Megalodon is essentially a huge Great White Shark I think it should be in PokeAus because Australia is known for Great Whites.

Well then just include a white shark, the issue with a Megalodon compared to say a Helicoprion is that it just looks like a regular shark. Except bigger which isn't all that relevant in sprites since a cat is only slightly smaller than a blue whale in game.

It could be a good fossil, but we foremost need a great white mon, so do we really want 2 extremely similar sharkmon? That's not to say we couldn't make them different, but if we want to stick to the great white/megalodon anatomy, diverging to make them unique could lose its reference.

Tyrantrum is a great example of a specific animal that they wanted to turn into a Pokemon. It's obviously a T-Rex, but it's not my mom's T-Rex, ya know?

I also have another idea, this is a bush tailed phascogale and its tail is often described as looking like a bottle brush so why not literally give it a bottle brush tail, bottle brushs also come in different colours so maybe regional differences or something

You guys do realize that every pokemon gen has a regional theme (well sort of), but they do not cling to it like crazy.

There is no need to have every fucking npc and pokemon in the game be a giant walking Australian billboard. In fact, you are going to need variety in your landscapes to the point where it won't really look too much like Australia when you guys are done. It's fine to pick a theme, but sticking to it too hard is what makes things get so boring (and prob part of the reason this failed last time)

No it can't. Having a bizarrely humanoid crocodile wearing clothes and a hat is not weirder than Lopunny. I am not going to pretend that there are not pokemon that wear clothes, but this just looks too much like a Donkey Kong enemy and not a pokemon. Maybe if you found a way to make the outfit look more natural it would be plausible, but it is not subtle enough to be a good reference.

This is another perfect example of an uncanny looking pokemon. The chest is just so awkward in the way it is muscled. The flippers are just a mess. Obviously not Sugi'ed (I can't draw like him so I wont judge) but the design needs a major overhaul. (unless you were posting this as an example of another unliked pokemon)

The best advice I can give you guys is subtlety in all things. Some of these concepts are just too busy, or too obvious in what they are trying to be. It is okay to be inspired by something, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to be able to see your inspiration the second you look at the final design. Some of the best pokemon designs of all time are simple, while the worst are almost always overdone.
