Hey. I'm new to the shiny hunting scene. Recently my ds broke and i'm too much of a poor fag to get a 3ds right now, so i'm limited to my old ruby version. (only the top screen is broke so i can play gba games)
That said, what is the best method for trying to get shinies in ruby? I'd like a shiny girafarig and already have one from the safari zone. Would i be better ff trying to find a new one from the safari zone or trying to hatch a shiny?

There's no MM on gen 3, so RE and breeding have pretty much the same rate IIRC, except that RE is usually faster.

The safari zone is one of the scariest places imaginable to try to shiny hunt because any pokemon you run into there can just randomly flee.

Hatching without a foreign ditto to activate the masuda method would take a very long time unless you got very lucky because its 1/8192 chance with a lot of time inbetween hatches

The best methods on a single cart without cheating devices are soft resetting which is saving in front of a legendary/stationary on screen pokemon and encountering it over and over until its shiny

Or using repels to run into a certain pokemon in the wild over and over again until you run into that 1 pokemon shiny.

Some grass patches will make you run into multiple pokemon even with a repel so that takes awhile

I'd say if this is your first time shiny hunting soft reset for a shiny starter, or get a master ball and save it to soft reset on either groudon, rayquaza, or the 3 regis.

And whichever one you use the masterball on, if you want to soft reset on another shiny in your ruby game come back here and I will help you make a team to catch the other pokemon shiny without the masterball

I'd suggest masterballing shiny groudon first. That way all the other legendaries in the game are left open to you

Atm just moltres. I was originally finishing the shiny regi trio with just regice but I thought I couldn't go after him with my current team so I decided to just try moltres for fun. Now that i've got a team ready for regice i'm going to finish moltres and start on him

Eevee isn't in ruby sadly. So that leaves egg hatching or safari zone. Egg hatching is the safe choice of the two because safari pokemon can flee.If you get a slugma from fiery path its ability will lower the amount of steps you need to hatch an egg. Slugma is rare though so it might take awhile.

I wouldn't attempt hatching a shiny pokemon on full odds 1/8192 unless you have no way to obtain the money to get another game for some time. Outside of sheer luck as a possibility, hatching that shiny will take a very long time.

While using the time machine method to get a flawless female Cradily, I just hatched a shiny Combee. No picture at the moment but it's a male with Honey Gather & 28/15/18/31/6-7/24 in IVs. Special Defense was the random stat it's worthless as far what I'm going for.

i recently bought a used Black 2 and found out the bastard was using disgusting cheats, he didn't even had half the dex but the shiny charm anyway.
i obviously want to start a new game... the cheat will be gone right? i won't start a new game and then have the shiny charm forever... right?

Oh yeah, Shiny Regice is one of my favorites.

It doesn't change much but it does look pretty, which is why I wanted to hunt Regis anyway. I'll also do Cobalion/Terrakion/Virizion, since I haven't really done a SR hunt before.

Once I get Platinum, I'm doing Shaymin for sure

Personally I'd still do them in ORAS either way, shiny events don't really lower the value of shinies to me anyway. It's just promotions they're doing.

Although a Shiny Regi trio event would be baller as fuck.

Rin your SR dedication has been very inspirational and has helped to keep me going.

I'm very relieved atm. As you guys have known i've hit wall after wall with my SR patience recentlybut after thinking on this problem recently a lot of things just started clicking and I believe I have managed to figure out how to hunt for very long periods without sacrificing stamina at all. I'm very happy about this.

I guess I have very little on the way of proof that they are all in fact legitimate, but at least my conscience is clean in that regard.
That Regice battle was tense, too. I mentioned it was most likely in its last Icy Winds when the ball finally clicked. Shit was intense, yo.
Not to mention I can still transfer them to 6th gen with the right tools.

I'm starting to think that having to hatch a large number of eggs for a shiny is a blessing in disguise. After going through 79 boxes for a shiny, getting to 30 boxes seems like child's play to me. I can only imagine how easy shiny hunting feels to Combee guy.

I agree, my longest mm project lasted around 4 months so breeding for just a week or two doesn't phase me as much and it really makes me appreciate just how lucky I am when I get a shiny after just a few batches like I managed twice this week.

Nope, I was NEET at the time so I spent just about all of my free time breeding, I never kept track of how many eggs I hatched but it was pretty crazy. This was during 5th gen.

The funny part was during the time after XY release but before pokebank I bred the same pokemon for good IVs just to use until I could transfer my shiny and hatched another shiny after like 10 eggs.

Going against my better judgment, I played through Ruby for the one and only reason of getting a golden Groudon. This was after Rayquaza, I believe, which I did share here.

After like 3 weeks I found it. With it I got officially done with 3rd gen, as I got every shone I was interested in from there.
Every now and then in that time I finally finished White. There, while Audino grinding in the Giant Chasm for the second E4 run, I went into the grass by accident once and a goddamn yellow Piloswine popped up.

After that I set off to SR for Cobalion, which is still going on now.

If I ever go back to 3rd gen, the only thing I'd be mildly interested to get would be shone Mew in Emerald. And that implies doing the runaway method, which can be nearly impossible to do correctly every time with a tiny touch digital keyboard.

I'd show a pic of the Piloswine or Groudon, but I'm too lazy to post from my phone.
Tl; dr: Masuda is hiding Cobalion from me for his own twisted amusement.

So, my first time posting in this thread.

I was waiting to do it until I made all the preparations to start the hunting, but what happened, was wonderful.

It is, in fact, my first time breeding, I'm still in my way to obtain shiny charm, and was just trying to do some tests with the destiny knot, everstone and such. Used a german ditto I got with a commom heliolisk from the game because I wanted one to use in a team, It looks cool to me.

Just in the SECOND egg he came to me, he is incredibly cute, and now I'm madly in love with him and thinking about the possibilities.

By the way, he's pentaperfect, missing the attack, timid nature(that's real bad, right?) and with dry skin, in a common pokeball. I can try to adapt him to a rain team, maybe... It's my first shiny, my baby, and I want to hold it forever. I never checked Heliolisk/ptile shiny color, but now I realize it's really cool.

Still no name for him, since I'm out of ideas.

I'm thinking in using his dry skin to a Rain team, it can cover moves that have recoil, or something like that. Regarding the living dex, I think it's worth it. I completed mine in Black, moved it to White 2, then to Y. I still get all the pokémon I can in the game before the transfer, but it's still really helpful.

Yeah, the contrasts are awesome.

The egg hatched around 3:40 PM, i was going to give it a try before sleeping. I stood there for some seconds and then "Awnnn I can't believe it..."

I knew it was a shiny but, by instinct, checked the one that hatched before. Then, after that, I stared at him for about 5 minutes laughing in low voice while whispering "awnnnn, its a shiny, soooooo cute".

It'll probably be really awkward when I have babies IRL, probably.

Well, y'know. Get the pokémon in the kalos dex, all 450 of them. Go for a while in the safari, trade decent IV pokémon. In my case, what worked is that I have the Icy Snow pattern Vivillon, so any regular pokémon was easy on the GTS. I even filled a box of Zygardes just by trading safari Vivillon, and occasionally, I can even trade them for Mewtwos, any of the bird trio or the dog trio, basically the "easier" legends. Other ways I can think of are trading pokémon with good items, BP ones, for instance.
When you're farther along on your dex, I can help you out with legend entries, also. I've helped out other people here before, it's not a hassle, and a good change of pace to unwind from just running around.

Coincidentally, I got a shiny red Basculin today over Wonder Trade... boring shiny, but a nice surprise.

I've only really just gotten started with the whole shiny hunting thing myself - I have a random encounter ponyta from Diamond, my Lapras i SRed for in HG, and the Lillipup I got in W2, amongst others that were gifts from friends or random GTS trades (got a legit shiny blissey from one, once... yeeeee). so I'm looking forward to getting another in X!

Is there any reason to use a Hexa parent over a Penta one if your intended mon isn't going to be a mixed attacker? Does it serve much purpose, or is it just a case of wanting to avoid the possible shame of a 4 IV shiny?
