The first modern game I got was platinum that year, until then all my knowledge of the games came from the anime, which I watched occasionally. I remember there being one episode where James got a Chimecho and people were saying how rare it was, so up until when I played platinum I thought Chimecho was some super rare and powerful pokemon.
