What exactly made mega gengar so fucking overpowered it got banned from ubers?
I don't keep up with smogon or even play showdown but i am a breedfag so i wanted to know if i were to breed a gengar what should the moveset be?

it's broken in 6v6 singles because it relies on switching, on cartridge rules it's still really good but shadow tag just isn't as effective there.

It's not so much overpowered as it is "uncompetitive", which is smogon's new favorite buzzword. Being able to remove a core mechanic of singles play (switching) and having tools like taunt, destiny bond and perish song make Gengar an incredibly useful pokemon, but that's only if you're up against someone who really knows how to use it.

It's uncompetitive. Essentially, it just twists the way the game is normally supposed to be played, and requires extremely abnormal ways of dealing with it that would be tailored specifically to only defeating M-Gengar.

It's the same thin with Double Team, but to a greater extent.

It's not that you can't beat it. It's that to beat it consistently, it essentially requires you to weaken your team structure significantly, which isn't healthy for the meta.

Secondly, that's not even true. Gamefreak can't predict how the metagame will develop anymore than any of us, so when they add things, (especially when they develop things typically for the Doubles meta), it can sometimes go haywire. Unless you think Funbro is totally how the game should be played.

There's a difference between overpowered and uncompetitive, though. Kyogre's overpowered, but it can be taken on by other overpowered threats. Something that just straight up haults competitive development is ucnompetitive.

I can somewhat agree with banning Mega G from OU just for the sake of Shadow Tag, but banning from Ubers as well? This poor fucker is going to jack off on its own in a limbo.

As for the overcentralizing in team building, this is something due to how retarded Smogon is in using always the same shit. Yeah, I get it, people use what is good. But holy crap, have fun then fighting billions of Talonflame, Azumarill, Rotom, and so on.

And talking of limiting your team building, the motherfucking smogonbird; this thing is cancer. Every single smogonfag uses it, and if your team doesn't have at least one counter to it, it's deemed as shit.

In a nutshell, that's why I quitted playing on Smogon during this gen. It's even more stable and annoying than last gen, and I fucking hated the weather wars.

At least I guess that thanks to the recents bans of Aegislash and Mega Mawile some new faces are popping up (but this is actually when Smogon to me went full retard. You ban those two things while keeping those fucking Geenies, which are literally unstoppable unless you have those exact checks like Talonflame or Greninja).

I don't agree with the Smogon elitism, I mean, I just make a team made out of my favorite pokemon and try to make them as competitive as possible but they're typically all in what Smogon considers "lower tiers" with maybe one or two sprinkled in from what they consider the main tier, "overused", which means I have to play in upper tier with lower tier pokemon and thus am at a statistical disadvantage. I can still grind out a win every once in a while though.

But I guarantee you that you that unless you are using one yourself, teams that break Smogon's rules will break you without breaking a sweat. Your special snowflake "fun" team will be completely unable to do anything.

Or you could make a team specifically designed to stop all the things that Smogon complains about and get your shit pushed in by regular teams because your team now has too many niche utility moves and pokemon that can't stand up to a direct fight.

Complain all you want, but you have to be a serious masochist to enjoy losing all the time because the pokemon you're up against has just become immune to attacks, or trapped a pokemon of yours that can't kill it in battle so that it can buff up to max and sweep your entire team, or getting trapped into an infinite battle, etc.

A counter is a Pokemon that can always come in on an opposing pokemon, reliably take any of their moves (barring outlying factors, like boosted stats or critical hits), and retaliate back with a KO.

A ghost Pokemon would be an example of a check, because it can manuever around Shadow Tag and potentially KO back. However, there aren't any Ghost pokemon faster than M-Gengar, and they all will be OHKOd by M-Gengar's Shadow Ball.

You're right, I did overlook Sableye. That might be the one example of a counter to Gengar, because it also has priority Taunt. Spiritomb might be able to take a Shadow Ball too, but it's not suited to be a counter as it can't reliably stop it back.

.. now, a Pokemon only having 1 stop still screams broken, but that's a whole different conversation.

He says the whole idea of something being trapped is uncompetitive. Deoxys-S takes shits all over his life even without taunt, a psycho boost OHKOs. If it's the perish trapping variety you get a free rocks turn when he protects.

If the gengar doesn't protect turn 1 you can totally fuckin kill him with anything in the entire ubers tier. Worst case scenario he D-Bonds and 1 for 1s you, which sucks, but if you weren't packing a counter to one of the most used mons in the tier, be happy you got away with that much, and then prepare your anus for his Geodeer to 5-0 you because you probably didnt bring a counter to that either.

I can agree that something luck based like Moody (evasion is debatable) should be banned for how annoying it is, but Mega Gar is just over powered, and for Christ sake, he's already among the Ubers.
Ubers, you know? Where you can get your ass whooped by the Geodeer just because you didn't like Mega Scizor enough to put him in your team. Is very fucking annoying and over centralizing that if you let this thing to set up you might as well forfeit? Yes. Should it be banned? None really although the same could be said about xerneas. And before anyone says there is; aegi and klefki get rekt by sub xerneas, scizor doesn't kill with bp and gets ohko'd by hpfire, ho-oh can't win if rocks are up, and same with spdef ogre. Xerneas HAS to run HP Fire in order to stop these threats, thus reducing its coverage.
There's Focus Blast which will have the exact same effect with a half percent lower difference, but then you have 70% accuracy to worry about.

Not that OP if it HAS to carry a HP or rely on a 70% accuracy move to avoid getting countered and geomancy is pretty much mandatory for SpA sets.

There is no difference between missing Focus Blast once and hitting, than using HP Fire twice, except that 70% of time you OHKO.

M-Scizor's bulkiest uber set is OHKOed 68% of the time with SR up.

Xerneas does NOT have to run Hidden Power, much less Hidden Power Fire. Like with the Ferrothorn, assuming you miss then hit with Focus Blast, it's no different than Hidden Power Fire twice on specially bulky 4x Steels (which are never OHKOed), except you OHKO 70% of the time.

Not saying I agree with the ban, but the strength is that M-Gengar doesn't have to stay in on any matchup, while every non-Ghost or non-Shadowtag mon is forced to stay in against M-Gengar.
M-Gengar can switch out from Deoxys-Speed, Electrode, or whatever else is on the opposing team. It wasn't that M-Gengar was an unparalled sweeper in Ubers. It guarantees breaking even at worst, and enabling a sweep for your Arceus/Xerneas/etc by taking one their team's one/two counter in every non-worst scenario.

I've been using the Perish Song Shadow Tag thing in doubles with stall support.
Holy shit, it's good. But it also takes some skill to use since Gengar is frail but has to stall, so the strategy requires some bulky team mates, Fake Outs, Follow Mes, Intimidates, etc. The team also has to be able to hold it's own without Perish Song since it can be shut down by Volt Switch/U-Turn and other ghost types.
It's really good, but it's not easy to pull off.

Nearly every ban in the last year has been utter ridiculous. The only fair one was MKhan, and his ban is ONLY fair because of double seismic toss (they should have just banned double seismic toss, c'mon).

Shadow tag? What the fuck is pursuit and knock off (which is fucking OP as shit this gen)?

Baton pass? What the fuck is toxic spikes, encore, perish song, taunt, etc. etc. etc. (it's fucking easy as shit to deal with baton pass + magic bounce, it's called fucking perish song, and tons of pokemon get it -- way more than RAPID SPIN ever was two gens ago; and yet we let OP as fuck SR stick around forever)

So yeah, mega gengar is strong, but consider using pokemon that are immune to shadow tag (like other ghost types, hell, shedinja gives mgengar a run for his money)

Wobb is piss easy to deal with and his ban in geniv was unjustified. Almost all of smogon agrees too his reactionary ban was a huge mistake.

The only really, really bad thing in pokemon is sleep spam, double team and mother fucking moody. Everything else is more or less acceptable and smogon just ruins the game by adding more arbitrary restrictions every six months.

Here's how it really works:
1. When you start a match, look at your opponent's team
2. Oh, he has a Wobb.
3. Does he have any good lead pokemon?
4. If not, send in your best anti-wobb pokemon (you do have taunt, right? At least something like volt switch or uturn?)
5. If he does, send in a pokemon which is moderately good against wobb and moderately good against his best potentia lead.
6. At any turn, consider the possibility of wobb coming in (this can be very easy to predict).
7. ???
8. Win games against wobb

If you have an ounce of gray matter you should be able to predict what wobb will do when he comes in and when he will come in. If you can't do even a little prediction, you're going to lose to much easier strategies than a wobb.
