I think Triples aren't as popular solely because the mechanics change dramatically in battle. The middle zone might as well be called "The murder zone" because the pokemon in mid has the most opportunities to be hit, and AoE attacks are put to the sides unless they are in mid.

You can still win with pure shit if you predict your opponent correctly. Something thats rather difficult in singles...

Triples and Rotations are kind of in the same boat, but rotation battles are a lot superior because there's an actual extra dynamic involved (switching) where in triples its kind of like "I hope I lucked out and put my Pokemon in the correct order!"

I think Triples is a really fun, if horribly unbalanced format. It'd take a lot of banning (though more moves/combos/strategies than Pokémon or items) to balance it in any way, but even as the mess it is in Battle Spot, it's really fun.

I've been playing triples more lately as it's a lot of fun, so much interesting stuff

Singles, Triples, and Rotation, all 3 battle modes are unfair and unbalanced AS FUCK. But double battles on the other hand, everything is balanced and the meta game makes sense.

It would be nice if smogon gave triples more support as well to give it more popularity. They've already recently put triples up on showdown. Now all they need is a council, a subforum and some tourneys for it.
