This actually makes sense, although he ended up using it as a way to ensnare Gliscor and defeat it. However, against Fire Fang, X-Scissor and that Stone Edge + Giga Impact ruse (although he didn't knew about the latter, obviously), I could see Torterra going down easily. However, seeing how he screwed his entire team with just a Drapion, exchanging Torterra for, say, Ninjask, would have been neat.
But, well, since Ash had to win, I think it was for the best, due to plot armor and all that shit. Another thing that I found awkward in that battle was the fact that Ninjask was OHKO'd by a Mach Punch of all things.

Megaizard Y seems somewhat likely because a lot of the Charizard circlejerking started with the anime anyway. Honestly I was always a bit doubtful we'd see Ash get a Mega for one of his old guard because of how much they hate continuity. I always thought it's more likely they'll just have him get some gen 6 pokemon mega towards the end of XY, when gen 7 pokemon start to be introduced in the show.

Ash encounters a bunch of fossil pokemon and doesn't think to catch any. Also befriends a haunter but doesn't try to catch it. Lets his pokemon treat him like shit all the time. Misty and Brock are gym leaders but have no idea how to help with situations like asshole charizard.

Misty's bitchiness which was considered cute and understandable back in the day is now...just bitchiness. Other girls proved you don't need a bad attitude to be realistic - she got better once she was gone. A lot of people didn't like so many pity badges. Ash's battling skill, while good at improv, was still lacking in things like mere tactics, or even analyzing his terrain. He fell too hard into the shounen main character definitive of charging headfirst into things without even realizing what he was doing. And the League was just a yawner with some rage inducing moments in between, like Worst Judge. And lets not forget early characterization weirdness like Ash/Giselle which vanished later. There were good episodes, yes, and good music, but in many ways...well I guess its good for nostalgia, and see how far he and the crew have come.
Johto had a MUCH better end-of-region arc.
Its why BW was so painful. It was like returning back to worse than S1 after seeing Ash go balls out hyper competent. In the end, like with BW, you just can't see Ash becoming Champion let alone a Pokemon Master from S1.
