And how about this: The region has 13 gym leaders, add the elite 4 and champion and we'll have all types covered.
You still only need 8 badges to get into the league, but you can choose which 8

A tiered system for challenging gyms. After beating the first gym, the next two become accessible and beatable at the same time. After clearing those, two more will be accessible etc.

>{Tier 1} - Gym A
>{Tier 2} - Gym B + C in either order
>{Tier 3} - Gym D + E in either order
>{Tier 4} - Gym F + G in either order
>{Tier 5} - Gym H

There could be some minor level scaling within tiers, with the second gym you challenge in each tier getting a small level boost to their teams. Wild Pokemon and trainers could also have their levels adjusted this way.

Sure, all i said was that you'd need 8 badges to get in, that doesn't mean you can't fight them all
Having 13 and only getting to fight some of them wouldn't be anything short of retarded

I had an idea for a hack like that. I have all the towns, routes and gym leader teams outlined, I just need to find the time to sit down and map and code it. I have the first 4 towns/cities and 7 routes mapped for the overworld, front sprites for all of the new mons and back sprites for most of them.

Real life (and making games I can actually sell) are more of a priority at the moment, unfortunately.

Varied like Blue was. Can't find most recent team list (I've changed the dex roster a few times until I found one that was varied, but the most recent notes I can find list his team as:
>Metagross
>Scrafty
>Conglolem (Rock type fake, evolved from pure grass to grass/rock to grass, high defence/sp. Attack) (haven't done any balancing or testing on him
>Draconeon (a since cut dragon eeveelution )
>Dragarbor (Dragon/Grass fake)
>Choking (since cut poison Weezing evo, replaced with something less stupid).

I've since learned I can get fairy into a Gen III cart, so I'm considering working in a fairy specialization somewhere.

I often see this in "realistic" interpretations, where, for example, some Snowpoint City native with only a Snover under his or her belt can begin his or her Trainer journey by challenging Candice.
Not every trainer starts where the Protagonist starts.

This is kinda contradicted by the fact that there have been skippable gym leaders since Gen 1 though.
