I really dislike using Showdown to practice VGC since there's no real timer and you can cancel moves, but it is nice for initial testing of teams since you can switch things so quickly and get so many battles in.

VGC related question. how important is speed for a charizard Y? the one i'm using has enough speed to outspeed max speed smeargle with the rest put into bulk. is this useful or should i just put all into bulk to ensure living rock slides from jolly garchomps (currently at 6.3% chance) and have more than 50% chance with adamant ones?

I'm currently running the same Speed. You could also probably run 144 Speed to outrun Timid Blastoise (which is getting more popular these days) or even 147 Speed to outrun things like 0 Speed Talonflame and Max Speed Mamoswine/Venusaur outside of sun/Gyarados/Gardevoir. More people are running LO Jolly Chomp these days so that might be a good benchmark for bulk.

If I had access to a computer I would say Showdown since my team won't be ready by tournament day, but unfortunately I will be using the car. Guess it's better this way since I can get a better VGC experience.

Enough to beat 252 +speed 80 bases is all you really need in the current ruleset since trying to coin flip against M-Khan is too risky.

Once the new ruleset opens up and comes into play I'd go back to max speed because you don't know what you will be coming back up against.

I used to run a Charizard Y with almost no speed investment and not even max SpA (212 if I remember correctly) with the rest in bulk.

All that bulk saved my ass a lot of times, I never regretted not investing in speed, since fast things are going to ouspeed you anyway.

this tourney has no price to it so just use it as intense practise
you'll never care about a showdown match like this, so you will pay extra attention to your mistakes and what your team is missing
while your team might not be perfect for this tournament it'll be definetely better after this tournament

The only thing I would have against a Skype group, is that it would most likely turn these threads into nothing but another circlejerk. It's a nice idea, but it could compromise the reason these threads are even made.
I would suggest just to make Nuggetbridge accounts as an alternative, so people knew someone they could test teams and tactics with on a frequent basis, but that could very well turn these threads into nothing more than a circlejerk aswell.

Because at level 50 there is no difference between 204 or 208 evs for Garchomp's attack stat, so they're put in another stat just to give it that 1 point boost.

because it's level 50 and it takes 8 EVs after the first 4 to get one stat point

advanced stuff below

also, one point in defense/special defense is always better than 1 point in HP, but since you'll be facing down both physical and special attackers and you can't determine the types of hits it'll take it's usually better to dump bulk into HP unless you're trying to survive a specific attack, like the HP ice from mega manectric.

Since we're at level 50, you need roughly 8 EVs for increase a stat by 1 point.
In Garchomp case, 204 and 208 both correspond to 176, so the leftovers 4EVs are put in the only stat that can benefit it, which is the uninvested defense.

Everyone complains that going full TR is not that viable right now but anyways, these are some mons that go well with TR:

Escavalier, Ferrothorn, M-Mawile, M-Ampharos, M-Abomasnow, Slowbro. Slowking, Aromatisse (almost a must thanks to its anti-taunt ability), Azumarill, Aegislash, Chandelure, Gardevoir, Talonflame (thanks to priority), Amoonguss, Hariyama, Scrafty, Marowak, Rhyperior and pretty much everything that's not super-fast. We even saw TR Gengar at Worlds.

Screens are useless with Alakazam, it's just too frail, while a redirecter would be a very good partner for Alakazam, but spread moves are a big thing in VGC, so be careful.

Alakazam is pretty bad in VGC, with a mediocre special attack, an awful type and limited coverage.
There's no reason to run over Greninja, for example, since it has a much better coverage and is even a bit faster.

Pic related is a TR team I built more recently, and I feel it's quite lack-luster. I might go Rock Slide > Protect on T-Tar.

Any suggestions? I'm kind of new to VGC, if it wasn't obvious enough.

Only one setter is pretty bad for a TR heavy team.
Rock Slide > Iron Head on a TR Mawile, since it let you muscle past Rotom-H and Carizard Y.

I'll suggest you to change Talonflame for Aromatisse or Chandelure, since Talon doesn't seems to fit you team very well, and you'll need another TR setter.

Since it's TR, I tried to make it bulky. I might replace Shadow Ball with Taunt, and put the rest into bulk. This looks kind of bad, though, but I think it's decent enough.

Redirection is the way to go, also you might want to use sub on it since it helps you against a lot of stuff not named Mega-Kang or with Infiltrator, but that wouldn't make sense with a sash.

Why Regenerator in Reuniclus? it's other abilities seem quite more useful if you consider that you won't and shouldn't be switching that much anyways. Also Sitrus>Leftovers most of the time because you'd need many turns to get some real recovery with lefties. If you plan to use Reuniclus as a bulky Psychic TR setter you might be better off using one of the Slow Brothers but that's up to you and your preferences.

You already have covered the 2 setters thing with >>20824453 but you should try to fit a Fire STAB since the only other fire attack you have is Tar's Fire Blast and Chandelure is able to nuke a lot of stuff with Overheat, for example.

Regenerator seeing as I might not keep it in often and I don't really feel I need Magic Guard or Overcoat. I might make it offensive, but should I replace Will-O-Wisp or Overheat? I might do Will-O-Wisp since it has a tendancy to miss.

might as well seek team advice. been trying this one on battle spot doubles last couple of days. doing fairly well, with like 11 wins and 3 or 4 loses(im at 1600 something). mamo was adamant but im changing it for a jolly one.
used to have a bulky weakness policy tyranitar but rhydon's LR was more useful and its pretty bulky as well so it's working

Sometimes those burns can change games though and can stop M-Kang anyday. It's up to you.

Switching in and out of your own TR doesn't seem like a good idea since it wastes your own turns. Magic Guard might not be that good in dubs but Overcoat is worth looking at since it will make you immune to spore and the like. Amoonguss gives mad trouble to TR.

Scrafty's Rock Slide is super weak, try Stone Edge.
Ice Shard on Scarf Mamo seems a waste, being locked in a 40BP move is very dangerous.
Why both Ice Beam and Freeze Dry on Lapras? Do Freeze Dry miss some KO?

actually i didn't think about stone edge, that might be pretty useful.
actually i never use ice shard, but could't think of another move to fill the slot so i left it just in case.
and i mistyped that ice beam, it's supposed to be ice shard, which helps against faster dragons with less than half health.

You should, the difference in power is pretty noticeable.
Also, Heat Wave > Flamethrower almost every time, it helps with prediction and chip (chip my ass, even neutral that thing hurts a lot) damage.
Overheat could be an option over HP Ice, since you already have 2 ice users, an it hits insanely hard, OHKOing 252HP Kanga most of the time and stripping 50% from Rotom-H.
For Mamo, you could either use Superpower or icicle Crash, which does more damage them Icicle Spears most of the time.

How are you feeling with Payback Scrafty? I used to run that too, but it's dark STAB is pretty weak.

i run flamethrower over heatwave mostly because of the damage and to avoid being blocked by wide guard and activating weakness policy aegislashes or somethings that i OHKO with flamethrower. HP ice lets me OHKO most dragons that fail to OHKO me thanks to the added bulk, and since heatran is not allowed i dont have much reason other than tyranitar to carry focus blast, in which case i prefer leaving tyranitar to another team member before sending charizard. as for overheat, i'd like to carry it but i can't make up my mind in taking HP ice out, and having it replace flamethrower seems kinda risky
superpower was my first choice but tutors can't come sooner. icicle crash seems like the better choice, it allows me to OHKO aerodactyls, which have been bothering me lately
as for scrafty's stab, i used to run crunch because i needed something to hit meowstics with, but it wasn't enough. since its very slow payback seemed better and though it's the move i use the least, the extra power was really useful in dealing with cats and gengars. i'll probably replace it with knock off when tutors come

The important thing is a starting time, the other stuff is mostly simple.
Time between rounds will probably be 30-45 minutes. (Time needed to coordinate with opponent. Match time is roughly 17 minutes top. Then reporting results and ladder update.)
Communication will probably need some sort of chat even though it seems a lot of people are against it, it's definitely easier then posting here.
Reporting matches shouldn't be a problem. Just have both parties tell the coordinator if they won or loss. If there is some conflict then post the uploaded match, but I don't think we will have that problem.

Doing it everything in one day like I think you are suggesting would be very hard, almost impossible even. It's one thing if it is a IRL tourney but on a online one you have to consider timezones and shit. That's not to say that the tourney should last 3 months each round either. 1 or 2 weeks for the thing to get done seems like a fitting timeframe.

I do agree that coordinating things will be easier on a chat. The one time I saw a tourney here on /vp/ they tried to keep everything on the thread and it was basically a phantom thread with people posting every 10 minutes if X was here and then X replying 5 hours later and by that time the person who originally asked was not there anymore. It would get rid of the people actually wanting a group too and creating it for this is not a bad excuse either even if down the road it'll become a general chat where we sometimes talk about Pokemon.

We are from different timezones, and most anons have work or college, so that we could be all online at the same time is pretty much impossible.
We could try 1 match per day, but that's pretty optimistic too.

Yes, that's how long it would be realistically. You need to allot enough time for each round to go its full playtime, 90 seconds for team preview and 15 minutes for the whole match and then there are the opening animations at the beginning and end of a match which throws in another 30 seconds. 17 minutes total.
You need to give time for the two people to coordinate exchanging friend codes and enter them. Or if an opponent wants to use showdown, the person who was planning on just using cart the whole time now needs to make their team on there.
Then the coordinator needs to receive everyone's results and enter them and update the ladder.

It was never said if the tournament was going to be all happening in one day or over several days. It was small enough when I signed up that it would have been a one day thing, but that's not the case anymore.

It's interesting how the past two years we've seen incredible anti-metagame choices propel players to worlds finals. Arash's mamo in 2013, now Jeudy's charizard y and Sejun's pachy and overheat talonflame. to me it emphasizes how teambuilding is as important as playing well, I don't think anyone thought Jeudy was truly the second best player at worlds 2014, or that Arash was the best player in 2013. but thanks to their incredible instincts for the metagame, they made the right calls, mamo for crushing genies, charizard y for crushing mawile. as far as Sejun, he was just the best player with the best team, unstoppable. in my opinion at least there were many better players than Jeudy who finished lower at worlds 2014, probably due to their subpar teams

If you really wanna try it there are a couple of things that can make it work... sort of

It has access to STAB rock moves such as Rock Slide, Stone Edge and Rock Tomb, each with it's own ups and downs.

Levitate gives it EQ immunity wich is always nice and allows you to have a partner to spam it. Another interesting options it gets are WoW, Dual Screens, TR, Cosmic Power (not that good to set up in dubs though) and Explosion.

It has a pretty nice special movepool, unfortunately it has shit sp. atk so let's thank GF again for another one of these mons.The same for a usable Psychic physical STAB.

Remember that being a Rock type it also gets a boost to its Sp.Def in sandstorm.

All in all it's not that good of a mon, but nothing stops you from trying to use it. While in paper it could seem lackluster it can actually get some bulk if invested carefully. Already mentioned this, but its acces to WoW is an interesting niche that can catch some players off-guard.

Personally, I think that Fire Fang is not worth it because of the low BP and imperfect accuracy, and the only real coverage it will grant is against things that are x4 weak to Fire.
Iron Head on the other hand has that reliable BP, STAB and 100% acc when you just need to finish a weakened mon and can't allow yourself to miss.
Some people run Rock Slide on their Mawiles because it can really come in handy against Y-Zards and Talonflames. (Usually coupled with TR support)

My favorite item is sash unless you can make the hard reads with life orb. It essentially prevents your opponent from stopping you from damaging them. I would sooner use Tornadus but it may not be legal next year and flying gem may not exist

My problem with Bisharp is that it's simply to frail. Unless your opponent is retarded or has nothing to counter it I just don't see the point.

Having said that I have one that's brought me some success. Rage Powder Amoongus + Iron Defense/Double Team Bisharp is great.

Not sure about that Magcargo there, I think that Rhyperior should stay (maybe, or even switch it for Eviolite Rhydon for extra balk). Now for mons that help you deal with rain you can try something bulky with Water Absorb (since no mons with Storm Drain are available in this meta yet) or you can go for the good ol' weather wars with T-Tar (you can even try using it as a secondary mega). Another very popular anti-rain mon is funnily enough, Ludicolo, mostly bulky AV sets that are able to hurt opposing water mons and Ludicolos while givng some nice Fake Out support and having only 3 weaknesses.

132 Spe lets it outspeed max speed base 70s

I might get rid of speed as it outspeeds Azu and Mawile without investment and Scarf Gardevoir is going to give it a hard time 100% of the time because it's a Specs set and Hydreigon can't do shit back without Flash Cannon which is kinda shitty coverage

124 HP is pretty neat as it lets it survive unboosted Dragon Claw from Jolly Garchomp OHKO it back

i run a semi-sun team and one of the best things i found to deal with rain is a bulky water absorb lapras. having access to freeze dry lets it deal easily with kingdra, ludicolo, gyarados and other common rain things, and it can take almost any hit they can throw at it.

If you want to say it simple, yes. That's it.

If you want the details, well...
You know, the max IV's are 31. The base Stat for HP is the Base +60 and the Base +5 for every other stat.
This said, for each two IV's, the Pokémon gain 1 point in the Stat.
IE, Blaziken Attack Stat is 120. With 0 IV's and a neutral nature it has 125, 126 if the IV is 2, 130 if the IV is 10, and so on.
Now, you have a leftover IV if the stat is perfect (31), Blaziken caps at 140 but is the same thing if it have 30 IV in that stat. Then is when the EV's enter, the first 4 EV's make the match for the leftover IV, and then for each 8 EVs you gain 1 point in the stat.

Why is nothing carrying protect?

Toxic spikes on Weezing is not that good, as not only is posion not a good status, but it also removes the chance to burn possible incoming physical attackers. I'd honestly say to use Rotom-H over it, as it has a similar porpouse but it's just better overall.

If you relly wanna use vivillon, just use it as a supporter with a fast (basically) spore. Drop Quiver dance and Bug buzz and put on a combination of protect, powder or rage powder. Powder may seem gimmicky but I think it can work, seeing as your team is really weak to fire. Rage powder will surely be unexpected and could be a good last chance, like follow me Lucario used at worlds, also considering you have a focus sash.

That skarmory set is just bad. If you really wanna use offensive skarmory, put weak armor on it with max/some spe and max attack, drop roost in favor of protect and give it a sitrus or lum berry, if it's not already taken. I wouldn't advise using it, but if you have fun with it, go ahead.

I have no idea about Relicanth, but put Rock slide over Double edge or EQ. Also the evs seem kind of wasted, try to outspeed just the key threats. 55 base is still slow.

If you're dead-set on using Relicanth, use a Swift Swim set and reconfigure your team to be a rain team. Vivillon can't stack Quiver Dances in doubles, so use Volcarona or something with Dragon Dance as a boosting sweeper or change Vivillon to be Friend Guard with screens/sleep powder support.

And run Protect. It's doubles.
