It upsets me that his competitive aspect is poor. I'm not even a big grass type fan, but him and gogoat are pretty damn great

From a compteitive standpoint and as a grass starter, Chesnaught is very good.
It suffers however from 7 different weaknesses and slow attack speed.
Overall though, he has a very decent niche and sees use in some OU teams for stalling.
