They're an interesting way of making old Pokemon that nobody would ever bother using into viable competitors. It's also nice when it's one of your favorite Pokemon that's getting its turn in the limelight.

These same Pokemon could have just had regular, permanent evolutions.

A better alternative to Mega Evolutions would have been split evo trees, like what Slowpoke or Porygon have. So you level up your Charmeleon inside the Dragons Den and it evolves into Charizard X, for example.

This would also have slowed the power creep.

Then how do you expect them to appeal to people of every taste?
Everyone wants something different out of Pokemon by way of design, teenagers want "edgy" dragons and things that look cool, girls want the stereotype of the Fairy Type and other cute things, older people choose others and some people happen to find the obvious Waifu Pokemon appealing.
Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I think they did, they mixed up the formula a bit, made some mons worthy of playing in VGC, and hope to see more in the future. I will retract this statement when future Mega Evolutions don't solve a problem that specific Pokémon faces or does something different and is just there to be there.

I don't like Megas either. I prefer actual evos instead. They may be hit and miss but some of them look great like Togekiss, Electivire, Mamoswine and Tangrowth.

That's not the reason why M-Gara is good.
You can use it for heavy mindgames since normal Gara is pretty good so the opponent can't bue sure that it even has a mega stone.

Now you can have fun with every mon that uses EQ since he can never be sure when or if you mega evolve and you can easily take advantage of that by hitting a mon on the switch.

There hasn't been anything of value since gen 3 though. After it every gen comes with the usual shit designs and the same plot. Probably the best thing was the change in physical/special moves but everything has been just the natural evolution of the mechanics.

I think Mega Evolutions for stuff like starters, Ampharos, and Gengar really did help evolve the series, so to speak. There was always that unwritten rule about 3-stage evolutions, and to evolve further beyond that is sorta really neat to me. When they announced my nigga Venusaur can evolve again I was hype as fuck and carried that thing all the way with me to the Elite 4 just to mega evolve it from time to time and not even actually attack with it or anything

The problem comes from giving stuff like Mawile and Banette mega evolutions instead of real ones. That outright cheapened a lot of the appeal the mechanic was going for. On the other hand, it is a really easy cop out since Gamefreak hates retcons with a passion. So outright refusing to make Umbreon an eeveelution using a moon stone and Espeon one using a sun stone, they have a way to say why Eviolite can't just happen to work for Mawile now despite not doing so in the past.

But it's fine though because it's always been fairy type I guess
