Smogon is imperfect. They ban things with no real justification other than top players don't like them.
However, sleep clause, evasion clause, even baton pass clause (though I preferred the more permissive bersion) are all good ideas.
Gamefreak is the opposite. They are lenient, which is good, and makes for a much more diverse meta (Pachirisu, anyone?) however, there are some things that are blatantly broken they need banned, especially in singles, which they don't even seem to really support.
The game is balanced around doubles by it's creators, which makes a fan community like smogon necessary for anyone that wants to play 6v6 singles, because some things that are balanced in doubles are too OP in singles (banlists) and some things which are good in doubles (PACHIRISU) are trash in singles, which makes usage tiers a great idea.
I just wish Smogon's ban system wasn't so elitist and arbitrary.
