If I'm not mistaken, didn't he bench Pikachu for the Gary fight? So it's not unthinkable for it to miss out on a big fight. It's already going to beat Mega Lucario to set a precedent of a normal pokemon beating a mega.

It's pretty much this, I'm not being ebin. They make him shit if the story needs it - like when Pikachu wasn't able to beat Viola's surskit - and then on the contrary they make him OP in illogical situations.

the thing is that anime even accounts for shit like field advantages as Surskit freezes the field and pikachu loses all of its momentum. Im not saying pikachu isn't overpowered in the anime but they at least try to make some sense.
