Smogon's bans often make sense, but the voting system is broken. The system is demonstrably skewed. It's akin to letting only the politicians suggest policy changes. Changes should come from the grassroots and be approved by high council. Not everyone can fix the issues they see, but everyone can see the faults in systems they routinely use. To ignore that large body is to ignore the community at large.
VGC bans are arbitrary and sometimes infuriating, but in many instances are just as functional at de-centralizing the meta. Just look at the similarities between VGC and Smogon's most used Pokemon. Smogon isn't decentralizing, they're just removing prominent threats.
