The moment you enter a cave with one in your bag, your character leaves the rope on the ground until they use it to find their way back to the entrance. If you leave the cave, they pull the rope till it's all the way back.

Yes, that's retarded, but that's the only answer i can come up with
Unless it's supposed to be more like a rope for speluncing, where you climb straight up, but that's not perfect either

Then it means someone tied it there before you entered the cave, so you just need to follow the rope to the exit.

I love how virtually every game with an Escape Rope or equivalent item causes the character to spin rapidly before teleporting to the exit. What was the first game to use the "I'm trapped in a whirlpool, halp" animation to depict "escape"?

Also pic related, I think it implies you climb up out of wherever you're stuck, though that usually doesn't make sense depending on where you are. (also doesn't explain why it's not reusable)
