Spikes is an annoying ass move. When used it puts spikes all over the opponent's side of the field and damages any non-Flying or non-levitating pokemon being sent out. So they just KO'd your pokemon or you have to switch out for whateverreason and ALREADY, right away before you can do anything your new pokemon just got weakened.

There's another version that [%]fucking[/%] poisons them too T_T

Anyway, my guess is some people see spikes as an overdone way to make something look tough or dangerous. It can get stale after a while for people.
