Do you really think that DARK PIT of all fucking characters is more important to Nintendo than the likes of Ridley and Mewtwo? Of course not.
Smash is literally a "Who Sakurai likes" contest. He puts some characters in because he absolutely has to (like DK and Samus), but you can be damn sure that if he was allowed full control, Metroid would be lucky to get a trophy and half the roster would be Kid Icarus and more anime characters from one-offs that no one's ever heard of.
"Getting into Smash Bros." isn't an indicator of how popular or important a character is, if that's what you're implying.
