Take how they did it the first episode. Manon sees some weird pokemon and approaches its trainer to know more about it. Manon introduces herself as a new trainer coming from Sycamore's lab to begin her journey. Alan brings up the fact he worked there. Manon brings up the news that there was an incident there just recently and yada yada Ash. It sounds like a natural conversation. Manon introducing herself as getting her starter from Sycamore didn't clue you in that it will lead to namedropping Ash.
Manon just bringing it up out of nowhere is what's forced since from the very start of the scenario the audience is aware that it's being brought up to establish the connection to Ash. It's why I asked for a non-forced scenario - asking for a little more to it because as it is, it's full of cringe. I'm not even going into how the dialogue itself sounds like.

The writers this gen is so competent and good, I won't be surprised if I let out a teardrop like a faggot on the farewell episodes.
I think Ash&Serena will say farewell to Clemont &Bonnie first because of the whole gym thing and it will be cool if Clemont&Bonnie knew Serena's feelings about Ash by them too.
Afterwards will be the confession of Serena's love or confession of Serena wanting to go to the next gen. Or i hope they will throw in a surprise we all can't guess.
