there's a pretty sizable amount of spider art in the Dropbox, and spiders seem to be popular. So rather than having a single line or multiple separate lines why not have a branched spider evolution. The baby/nfe form could be a young ballooning spider (bug/flying or bug with levitate) and it can then have location based evolution upon reaching a certain level (becomes a bug/water diving belle spider on a water/swamp route, bug/ground funnelweb on a forest/bushy route, etc.)

Thorndle is the best fuckin' thing we've got for a starter right now. We have good ideas for it, like it becoming a kaijuu for the final stage. People LIKE that idea and would use it. Don't scrap it just because "MUH ZODIAC MONS".

I really don't like the skull. What we had before was fine and actually had a lot more of a desert theme to it because Australian outbacks are known a lot more for their rock formations than generic "western cowboy" imagery.

Even hobart cares for its beaches. Which is practically antarctic compared to the rest of australia.

Note that none of these shots feature pollution. Which is something that sets Australian beaches apart from say english or some american ones.

Moving south. The glasshouse mountains. Most Australian rainforests or forests are very much associated with mountains. These are some very notable ones for looking to peculiar. They're ex-volcanoes where the rest of the volcano eroded away leaving the solid as fuck interior.

Sounds like an interesting concept for a water/fairy type. Black swans don't live by the sea, but maybe incorporate elements of the constellation Cygnus? Less ballet, more astral/lunar and Valkyrie inspirations. Maybe adorn it with shells too? Some inspiration from The Birth of Venus.

I just think the Steel/Fairy/Fighting sub triangle is too good to pass up.

Grass starter suggestion, subversion of what you would normally think of when you think Crocodile. I don't have names for them yet.

Stage one: Small green crocodile, extremely anxious look on it's face. Rather than being a vicious reptilian predator, it's shy. It can either cover it's eyes with it's front ...paws?... or hide under a leaf that's growing from it's body. It's teeth are little nublets at best.

Stage two: Larger crocodile, still looking a bit anxious but no longer hiding it's eyes. The leaf growing from it's body has developed into a bush on or around it's body, and although it portrays some confidence, it's easily frightened and will tuck itself into it's own bush. (How is irrelevant)

Stage three: Huge ass crocodile, maybe one of those extinct ones with long legs. Body covered in tree-bark like scales, sharp teeth. No longer anxious.

Holy shit, someone focus on this. The only things aspects that may be tricky about this are deciding what species to base the evolutions off of, and how many branching evos there should be. Five seems like a bit much, but for some reason, three doesn't seem like enough to me.

Also god damnit I can't believe the Australian habitat theme won. The point of starter pokemon is that they're rare in the habitat of the home region. The Japanese theme would have made more sense and been more fun at the same time.

Just thinking about the grass/rock type crocodile idea. Maybe starting off as having a leaf tail and eventually getting leaves/moss for camouflage ( >>20987965 ) and longer legs in the final like those prehistoric crocodiles. Here are just a few of the possibilities;

1) Bait worm causes a specific rare water type to appear when fishing if at front of party. You can still have a normal evolution with this, but then you can't do #2:

2) If you catch a specific water type while Bait worm is active, they'll both evolve/merge at the end of the battle. Think of it like Shellder/Remoraid but with an actual merge.

3) Having the bait worm / specific water type in the party together will cause either to evolve or merge upon the next level up.

If you like that Wyrm, maybe you catch some sort of Eel with the bait and they become one.

Take the leaf tail and make it big enough that he can curl it over his body to hide under it.

In stage two, make the leaf become more like a very leafy bush and have it cover most of his tail and torso, so he can hide in it when he needs to.

on the right track, but consider it's personality and try different poses. your art is making it look more generic than it is.

First stage: lower it's head and extend it's front feet forward, like it's about to cover it's eyes. have the leaf come closer to the head. express its anxiety.

Second stage: the bottom one is more of what i was thinking but it's too bushy, since there is no bush at all in the first. tone it down a little. his face is too confident, he still needs a little bit of anxiety.

Final stage: Have him stand a little more upright, but not fully upright, like Swampert. The bush went away, bring it back. Remove the rock references or tone them down.

Grass starter doesn't need to be /Rock, btw.

How about this:
It's a regular worm bait Pokemon that lures out super rare Fish single-stage.

It evolves by being in the lead when said rare fish is defeated (only in the wild.)

Basically the bait becomes the predator by defeating it's own predator.

You'd have to decide: Catch super rare fish or evolve BaitWorm to HookBeast.

(also make sure the hook stays a part of it somehow)

But the hook supports the theme of the line, which is worms vs wyrms.
It starts as a worm, a weak/useless bug that is consistently used as bait, and then it become a wyrm, a powerful dragon that is feared.
(plus both are known to live underground)

Additionally, the worm's horn from the "hook tip" becomes the horn in the wyrm which is based on the close up of a worm's head.

Anyway here's my idea for a legendary trio, loosely based off of three of the major disasters that effect Australia. Fires, Floods and Cyclones.

First, a crow for bushfires.

An actual dreamtime story here. The story of the crow that stole fire and got burnt (thus, crows are black. Aboriginal logic mang). Picturing some sort of delibirdesque creature that throws coals from its bag of goodies, spreading fires to make up for when it got burnt all those years ago. Bird logic.

The other two are both covered here.

Bellin Bellin, the trickster crow creates winds from its own bags. A contrast to the other crow that spreads coals from its bags.

The third, Bunjil himself (an eagle) is said to have both used bellin bellins winds to ascend into the sky and become a star with his wives. On top of this, Bunjil is associated with the rising seas that happened a fair bit in the period when dreamtime stories were being formed. (end of the ice age, also the murray river area had a tendency to flood inwards. There are records of aborigines hunting traditionally salt water creatures as far inland as swan reach).
So essentially flooding. A 'good' leader to the two cheeky cunts.

Thoughts on that?

I'm loving the proportions on both of them, and the designs just in general. I feel they strike a good balance between cute and detailed without being over designed. I would like to see a picture of the second evo though from another angle with opened up claws just to get a better feel for it.

As far as color schemes go I feel that a beige, brown, yellow and hits of black would work best.

How we should approach these birds is another deal. Huge elemental birds were done before. Since these gods are associated with the human world, make them humanesque? Manshaped figures with bird/element motifs?

Three sets of legendaries for the Human World, Physical World and Sacred World would be interesting, though not all of them should be trios. Bunjil, Crow and Bellin Bellin would be great for either the Human or Physical World.

The next fucking gen was France and America region got Three Musketeers. Theme is not fucking binding and should not be forced and obvious.

Speaking of orchids, I've got a starter design idea.

It's loosely based on the orchid mantis, Grass/Bug. I don't think the secondary Bug type will interfere too much early-game with what this starter's supposed to do (Bulbasaur's Poison wasn't really major, so we could work with Bug). The line evokes the coming of spring: the first stage has leaves but with a little foreshadowing to flowers, and the petals start to become part of the design. The final could be based on a mythical swordsman or dancer. Mantids are pretty common in Asia, and Pokemon's from Japan, so I think an very, small touch of Eastern inspiration would fit. Don't make it too obvious a la the kamen shrimp or magical glider, for example. Also the petals should not be Pink, rather white or a light green. Pink petals would bring tons of bile from Sage.

It thematically fits with another starter as well: Thorndle. The guy is a thorny dragon, and they eat bugs. This starter is a bug. So it only makes sense that it loses to Thorndle. Food chain, man.

My best advice is try to make it look as marketable and Happy Meal a starter could look.

What about a two staged sewer gator/snapping turtle pokemon? First stage is pretty much a sewer pipe with legs and a tail sticking out and small glowing eyes looking from inside. When it evolves it's sewer shell hardens, legs and tail become stronger, and it reveals it's ugly head. I was thinking maybe rock/dragon to rock steel?

That's too dark of a green for something that ought to lose the dark green coloration to reflect it has transformed into a Grass/Fairy Shaman.

We either go the pale green route without being bland and overall green or we incorporate an orchid into an orchid mantis design. Sage can lay claim to that idea but it is far from original. I think the green, seafoam green, and pale pink scheme is somewhat mystical too. Even if the pink becomes facepaintbrush that is reminiscent of a closed/frayed petal

, which has lighter greens than the both of ours. I just added a basic green that's trademark for Grass starters, but if it clashes too much with the petals it's perfectly fine to revert back to the first scheme.

Also I never thought of a shaman theme, nicely done. Though I'd like to keep it Grass/Bug.

Tried making that mantis a triple line.
I don't know about the second stage, I guess it's a tulip or some shit.

Also, I think it'd be cool if the last stage was a flying type, with flower petal wings. Ties into the dancer, too.

Not entirely sold on the first evolution yet though. I feel the leaves on its back need to be longer, almost in the vein of Cyndaquil's flames or Oddish' leaves. I'd also like to see it with an open mouth.

I was busy, so I didn't get a chance until now to draw my idea for the evos

going with >>21007057 's idea of more white, less pink but also putting a little creamy yellow into it. Kind of a pseudo quadripedal body, usually walking on 4 legs but able to go on 2, more that anything to make it more unique when compared to similar things like Scyther or Leavanny and to cut down on the number of limbs. Still has some pink, but it's limited to the eyes and facepaint idea that's been tossed around, sort of like a shaman thing or even a kabuki thing now that I look at it

Thats would be pretty cool, for example only in attacking animations? And a reference to its wings in its movepool, being able to learn flying type moves.

Could you maybe design my idea too.. i tried to be detailed:
It starts of with a small typical ghost.
By typical i mean, the kind kids dress up as when its halloween, you know a white blanket, with 2 large holes for the eyes, which are just plain dark blue/black colored.
It has no arms, and from under the blanket you can see 2 dark feet with 3 pointy toes.
It has a smile on its face which looks like stitches.
It is normal/dark type. Ability prankster.
Known for scaring other pokemon and stealing their berries, this pokemon loves to play pranks on others.

The second stage has arms added, with 3 large fingers and its no longer smiling,
its larger aswell, typing, normal/dark
Other pokemon avoid it, it is said to be cursed after stealing from a burial site.

The 3rd stage is a floating form of the previous stage without legs, the eyes are now hollow. Its mouth is open but appears to be melting/torn
underneath it is a shadowy circle, that has 2 dark mean looking eyes.
Typing, normal/ghost, ability levitate.
This pokemon is said to bring misfortune upon anyone who sees it.
It is a rare sight however.

It is a slow pokemon with high HP, atk and good other stats.
Personally id like it as a psuedo, or semi psuedo.

The underlying thought it basically that it was a childlike pokemon that did pranks, and crossed the line several times, eventually it became cursed, abandoned and feared, eventually dying and becomming a corrupted soul in its final stage.

I don't know, I'd like it to be Grass/Bug all three stages. It's one of the worst types, don't get me wrong, but if it can be useful despite that disadvantage, that'd be pretty great.

It's kind of like the Fire starter from Sage. Awful type but it has potential to kick ass.

The jester gloves add more color to them and are a nice addition.
3rd stage is awesome!

the prisoner one is fun too, although the other one has my preference. the sizes seem a little off for the last one, maybe the robe-body should be a bit larger. The prisoner theme is a good one though, very creative and fits with the theme nicely.

im saving these for future use

Hey I have an idea. Maybe instead of Dinosaur fossils, we could do Megafauna fossils?
(Or have a region of the game where Megafauna pokemon spawn)
It's pretty Australia unique and there's plenty of cool choice.

Right off the top of my head:
The Giant Ground Sloth is one big cute critter, it even looks like a pokemon already.
Maybe a Ground/Normal with two evolutions?
A small cuter one, with three little nub claws per hand, and then a much larger one with a rack of much bigger claws (Maybe mix it in with the Therizinosaur for the huge claws?)

As well as this, maybe a Bunyip (Which turned out to be a real animal called the Ripper Lizard) pokemon. It's basically a giant Goanna that buried itself near waterways to ambush prey. Maybe a ground/water? Its first evolution could be a regular goanna, though maybe with a sail-tailed basilisk sail, and then the Ripper Lizard could have a low sail across its whole body.
We could call it the Goayip? Or maybe the Burroanna?
You could actually even make a Pseudo-legendary, as it's that in real life, maybe give it a real high level for the evolution (So you really have to stick with Goanna, maybe even a preevolution that's Frill Neck lizard)

Thoughts?

They can be really good in-game because Grass/Bug can be a genuinely useful type. You'll need a Rock to fight against their weaknesses, but since in-game is far less reliant on switches and balanced teams than competitive, it allows them to shine more.

I've been thinking about a Water/Rock starter, though I haven't solidified any ideas for it. I just think it would fit since Grass/Bug is 4x SE from Fire, Fire/Ground (one of Thorndle's proposed final types) is 4x weak to Water, and so Water/Rock is 4x weak to Grass. The types also have advantages over who counters them to a degree (Grass starter quad resists Ground attacks, Fire and Water starters can do SE damage against the rest), though the stats would hinder these somewhat (like the bug being faster than the Water starter). But the quad weaknesses are the most obvious faults in them, giving them a balance.

Alright so the first thought is that it should be a mammal or monotreme, because we have an invertebrate and a reptile

That leaves us with seals, sea lions, whales and platypi. We could extend the theme and have a mammal that doesn't usually live in the water, but I feel like that's a mistake

Also as is it doesn't seem like we necessarily have to do the "It's a platypus that grows a surfboard out of its ass" line

Sea lion would work really well I think seeing as more often than not water starters have been creatures that live both in and out of water.

Why can't we have two invertebrates from completely different sub-phyla (thanks wikipedia). Prawns are less closely related to mantids than otters are to pigs, and as far as I'm aware snakes too. If gamefreak can have gens when three out of three starters are vertebrates then why can't we have two out of three be invertebrates? If anything it's less biased than gamefreak

I like the idea of implementing more coral into this region. Corsola is cool and all, but there are just so many different species of coral we could still work into things.

I think we should also consider things that are close to or tied to Australia. As far as I'm aware it's a pretty arid country so the chance of incorporating a lot of ice pokemon that make sense is not really there. Australia does however own a chunk of Antarctica so I think some sort of ice land outpost is not out of question here.

I did a quick sketch of how it could look. Given that the head and crest are the same shape as a puffin's, as with the squat body, I'm not sure how else it could be drawn.

This is the best one I have seen yet. The first stage is absolutely marketable and cute. Second stage has a sense of serenity to it which I like. Where I do love the third stage and the color scheme I'm not entirely sure of the golden cross decors just yet. do seem a bit too bulky, and their positioning on the wings give it too much of an Empoleon vibe.I feel it would work better if the gold simply brushed against the tips of the feathers instead of bulky decors on it like that.

What if the starter was a crab? Crabs can live in rockpools and come in a variety of colors. It could also satisfy the people who supported the prawn. The food chain thing would be screwed though.

I agree. I'm personally all on board for those designs, but there should be some level of consensus here. If we're gonna have Valkyrie swan there we should definitely have the ligher color scheme in my opinion for instance.

Also, we should try to think money grubbing company here for a moment. Do you think kids would buy stuffed animals of these guys?

Could you be more specific? What parts do you like/dislike? We need suggestions along with any criticism. This does takes time you know. Most people seemed set upon a fairy final evo. I was hoping the final stage would have gender differences of a white and pink/blue-green color scheme. I'll post an example

Not the one you're responding to, but I'll chip in. I personally enjoy the pink highlight on its back, but that's it. Messing too much with it's face will just end up looking cluttered. I also imagine the mouth sitting underneath what we can see of the face so trying to force it between the eyes like that is a no-go.

I like the pink one, if only for it making the eyes look more natural. I'm hard pressed to call either of these done though. The coloring seem more accents than the actual color scheme they are meant to have.

Both of those need work, both in their color scheme and body. I'd go with the one on the right, but it needs to have more prominent green on the body (the petals are fine), and replace the blue with the touch of pink from the first stage.

I just don't like that shade of green and all the unneccesary pink highlights. It doesn't need to have an orchid mantis theme in all stages and mantises are a lighter green than that. I say >>21032813 still looks best

Rather than have the pink stripe go through the 'W' shape on the mouth you should have it end at the top of it and instead cover the entire bottom half in the mint green color you see there. Also, can we see the original baby swan color next to them? I feel the dark colors look too mature and too final evo compared to the lighter color scheme.
