I'm terrible at making teams because I never make it out of ELO hell and therefore never learn the meta.

Does anyone have a common threatlist with checks and counters? Team archetype starting points?

just use stolen teams until you learn more about the game imo
an ok threat list is the OU viability ranking thread on smogon, your team should be able to cover most stuff listed there

It's kind of hard to explain.
Basically start with something you like or want to use.
What does that thing do well? What weaknesses does it have?
Add something that can capitalize off of what that thing does well. Add something that can cover its weakness.
Then fill in any more weaknesses you see from there.
Do you have something that can switch on earthquake?
Do you have something that can take bird spam?
Do you have something that can set rocks not vital, but helpful, especially with talonflame/charizard around or do you have something that can remove rocks?
Do you have something for lando?
Do you have something for poney?
Do you have fighting/ground move for heatran?
Do you have something that can absorb status?
Do you know why my captcha is somebody's mailbox?
Do you have something to taunt?
Do you have something to phase?

If you can answer most of these with yes you should do more than fine. Obviously it is incredibly hard to get all of them. Go here and steal someone's team and look at the reasoning behind their choices. http://www.smogon.com/forums/forums/xy-ou-teams.261/

OU is a shitshow.
RU is probably one of the better tiers right now. Believe it or not, but shuckle was banned from RU ridiculously fast after its usage picked up.

First off, replace Psycho Cut with Zen Headbutt on Mega Medi. Next, replace Surf on Latios with T-bolt or HP Fire. Finally, nothing on your team can switch into Azumarill, so maybe make Rotom-W more physically defensive or scrap one of your members

You have mold breaker excadrill with a tyranitar, it doesn't matter that tyranitar isn't holding a smooth rock give excadrill fucking sand rush. Azumarill is going to shit all over you, especially with specially defensive rotom. Slowbro looks like it would be a bitch to get rid of for that team.

Ok thanks, I've made these changes, at the moment I'm running a defensive Rotom-w, would it perhaps be worth switching it out for something else (although I can't think of anything), and without mold-breaker Excadrill, how do I stop rotom-W?

Switch out Rotom W with Amoonguss, not only is it an excellent Azumarill check with great recovery, it also counters Rotom W

You could also run adamant medicham with thunder punch to OHKO azumarill and 2HKO slowbro if they prove to be big enough problems. You may want to slap ice beam on ttar to lure lando-t and maybe ice punch on conk if you do that.
