True, Ash's Krookodile was pretty cool.

Makes me wonder why they even brought back Charizard then if he already had a fully evolved powerhouse... it'd make more sense to bring back Charizard now of all times, considering that it has two Mega Evolutions. Since Alan got X, Ash could get Y. I suppose there's no reason why he can't bring it back anyway, but Charizard seemed really unnecessary in Best Wishes.

Same reason they heavily advertised the Eevee line for like half a year before Sylveon got revealed. It was just them going "Hey hey remember Charizard? He's cool right? Right? Look how awesome he is." to ensure the kids would get really excited when it got two megas.

It's likely in response to a new line of Pokemon sunglasses that have become a somewhat of a sensation in Japan. The glasses are packaged on a cardboard Pikachu face, and many people have taken to putting their own glasses on Pokemon plushies.

There was actually a thread about it here within the last few weeks. I think Masuda got in on the craze or something.

Unlikely. The episode is airing next month, so it was written in early 2014, and the decision to have Serena catch a Pokemon like this as probably made even earlier than that. Cartoons take time to produce.

I watched the first few episodes of XY, and I read the summaries of a few others. Really disappointed that Serena STILL hasn't caught anything. I was hoping Ash would get a Pancham, really seems to fit him. Maybe it will be Buizel 2.0 and Serena will trade it to Ash for something more her style.

except Kalos doesn't have contests, or musicals, or anything for Serena to be interested in that doesn't involve just following Ash, unless those pokemon tv promos are more developed than in the video game, or if there's some kind of poke-puff related thing to do.
