Because with both Robin and Zelda, it wouldn't have much of a niche as a spell-caster character.

Now Chesnaught, there was no excuse. Another tanky character would have been a great addition to the roster.

They went with Greninja only for cool factor and moveset potential and Charizard because they already had his assets laying around and his surge in popularity due to Gen VI on top of nostalgia fuel.

The only Pokemon that GF pandered to in Gen VI were Sylveon and Charizard. I find it funny when people try invent stuff to validate their shit choices, like that guy on /v/ that said it was obvious that GF was pandering Greninja because "of how prominently he appears on the anime".

Real answer was stated in an interview long ago. Greninja was essentially one if the first designs from XY, even before its preevos. They needed an XY rep, but the only important mon finalized aside from probably legendaries and a few random throwaways was Greninja. He essentially won by default since production schedules made Smash and XY a little out if sync.

So we may very well have had a different rep if XY were further in development when smash was being made.

Just imagine if GF didn't fuck upon abilities and gave Delphox protein and Greninja magician (with different names). It makes more sense for the mage to change elemental typing and the rogue to steal. Delphox would also need a better movepool as well.
