They are afraid that their American audience might take offensive or be upset with some of the topics. Culture here is different than in Japan, and the American versions of red and blue came out 2 years after the Japanese red and green so I shouldn't have to say that it is a game heavily influenced by Japanese culture and not American culture, like the games that followed.

The Unown mythos in Gold/Silver have a fond place in my memory. They're just such a bizarre concept. Natu became my favourite Pokemon because it's a weird future seeing bird with creepy eyes that just lives outside these mysterious ruins full of floating letters. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum stuff with Arceus just made it even better.

I was never a fan of the Unown but Natu and Xatu do have a close place in my heart.

i think it has to do withe the idea of an entire society and population being forever engulfed by the sad and unevitable truth that is the end. And also how this slowly creeping into your thanks to the omnipresent feeling.

. Practically every NPC says something depressing or pessimistic and also makes you think and consider your insignificancy in this world by shouting out certain deterministic truths

Furthermore the town is almost isolated and secluded away by the "mountains in the far end of the region. The lack of colors takes away all emotions and leaves only the sadness and emptiness.
And then there is the music of course, which echoes every matter reflected upon within the town and never letting you escape from the truth it all stands for and represents.

Basically the whole story is reflected and repeated over and over for as long ad you stay, to make sure you remeber it forever...

What is your view on this guys?

I think it's the music and the fact that it has black and white Gameboy graphics, mixed with the fanbase who constantly makes it look more creepy than it really is.
