It's not continuity obessive, with every episode having a refrence to something that happened 300 episodes ago and Ash going into great detail about every previous episode that featured a Pokemon if they make repeat appearances, but yeah, there is some continuity.

What Sana said about it was basically a description of the video game Pokemon Contests (with the stuff from ORAS added in), where reaching Master Class involves winning each type of contest 3 times.
