Either the official art was goofed or the ingame model isn't up to date. I'm praying for the former; it's still no class act but it's far better without the megadactyl-tier bullshit.

I didn't notice that, actually. Still a vast improvement even if the spikes are a little goofy. At least you don't have to stare at 'em all the time.

Half of the appeal of mega evolutions for me is to get utterly pissed at the designs, and then learning to like it by justifying why they designed them the way they are

The blurb on the official site implied that those spikes are not retractable, but more like teeth that grow incredibly fast and snap off after attacking, just like real shark teeth. I like how Sharpedo looks like a 3/4 of a shark instead of half a shark, making it look like a submarine

What I've realized is that mega evolutions never really look that bad, but rather, they all suffer from shitty Sugimori art. I learned to like a mega evolution after seeing it in-game.

it's a battle form, the head spikes would protect it and make its head smash and other moves hit harder.

they wanted to make it look more robust but not in the typical 'it just gets bigger' sort of way, so they added heft via rock spikes.

best part is that the official site mentions that it's mega actually is more of a rock than it's original form. so that implies it's rock typing isn't a result of being fossilized, since it was more of a rock before being fossilized.
What if fossilized pokemon get megas/primal forms that also regress before fossilization and lose their rock typing? mega-aerodactyl really opened up the gates for possibilities here.

Fossil Pokemon exist because their hard, rocky body parts managed to stay more-or-less intact after millions and millions of years. The soft-bodied ones simply failed to leave any traces.
Mega/Primal fossil mons wouldn't lose their Rock-typing. If anything, they'd become even rockier like Aerodactyl did.
