The middle one is by far the best one in my opinion. I have to give lots of props to the one on the left for being the original design, but the other ones just look way cleaner.

The third one really messed up the face with the stripes going through it, but I do like the pink accent on its butt.

Cute croc is really cute, but I don't really feel that it holds a candle up against Thorndle who already has the lazy eyes going for it. I am on board for having croc in the game at some point, but finding a place for it to be a starter is difficult for me personally.

Why was the mantis even considered for a starter? It doesn't fit in at all. Make it a late game bug or something, but don't shoehorn it in as a starter just because it's there.

This project has some serious ADHD. How many starters have you gone through now without trying to properly focus on a single one? You haven't even come up with a base concept for most of them.

Speaking of orchids, I've got a starter design idea.

It's loosely based on the orchid mantis, Grass/Bug. I don't think the secondary Bug type will interfere too much early-game with what this starter's supposed to do (Bulbasaur's Poison wasn't really major, so we could work with Bug). The line evokes the coming of spring: the first stage has leaves but with a little foreshadowing to flowers, and the petals start to become part of the design. The final could be based on a mythical swordsman or dancer. Mantids are pretty common in Asia, and Pokemon's from Japan, so I think an very, small touch of Eastern inspiration would fit. Don't make it too obvious a la the kamen shrimp or magical glider, for example. Also the petals should not be Pink, rather white or a light green. Pink petals would bring tons of bile from Sage.

It thematically fits with another starter as well: Thorndle. The guy is a thorny dragon, and they eat bugs. This starter is a bug. So it only makes sense that it loses to Thorndle. Food chain, man.

My best advice is try to make it look as marketable and Happy Meal a starter could look.

So far, you don't really seem to have that, or at least it's ill-defined. Let me give you a hypothetical concept based on what I've seen then.

And HOW is that different from any of the other starters you guys have been through? I've seen every starter discussed in "the thread before", only for someone to come in wanting their idea to become the icon of the project and completely dismissing the previous idea without pointing out why it's bad.

And don't try to justify the bug as a starter. It's a BUG. It simply doesn't fit and seems redundant when the project will likely be full of bug types anyway. The water prawn only slightly got away with it, but this doesn't.

When this project was founded, everyone had nearly unanimously agreed that the starters would both relatively stick to tradition and avoid Australian stereotypes. Somewhere along the line, the original group vanished and some faggots jumped in and forced the platypus and sugarglider down everyone's throats. Neither garnered massive support, instead it was just insane samefagging amongst a very select few people.

If you want the starters to be successful you need to find a concept that works. The mantis, the sugarglider, and even the croc (as it is now) do not work. Take a look at Chespin: He is pretty terrible in both design aesthetic and likeability. He broke tradition from the reptilian inspiration all of the formers had.

And the worst water starter that was nearly unanimously hated in design? Piplup. It wasn't a river creature like Squirtle, Totodile, Mudkip, Oshawott, and Froakie, the latter of which is the only liked starter of the last generation.

So here is what you all need to do:
Find a reptile for the grass starter that isn't: Toad, Sauropod, Gecko/Dromaeosaurus, Turtle, or Snake. Crocodile has thus far been the best option, but any kind of dinosaur would also work. Forget that Thorndle is a reptile, that is completely irrelevant to anything.

For water creature: Find something that lives in rivers. It doesn't necessarily need to be a reptile or amphibian as proven by Oshawott, but it SHOULD be something that lives in a river, swamp, or marshland.

It doesn't fit in aesthetically when placed next to the other starters. Bug would also make it a punching bag compared to the other starters and even early game bird mon. And don't say "it becomes fairy" later because that's pretty silly for it to suddenly switch types, and even stranger if you get rid of the bug typing when it clearly is a bug.

Put it elsewhere in the dex - like the safari zone area - and come up with a starter that fits in and can related to the other starters on equal footing.

You have your beach/rainforest/desert theme, but there's honestly not a lot to work with there. An anon posted a bunch of photos, but there's really not much to grab from them if you're not familiar with Australia and its culture/environment.

Thorndle, so far, is the only thing that's perfect in concept for its design, but all the water and grass ones are missing the mark. I'll list what Thorndle gets right and what the others should do:

>colour scheme is earthy like the red outback and sticks to the outback theme further by incorporating rock elements

Glad you liked my design, anon, but it was come up with in just one day using design elements from previous grass starters suggested. I don't tend to design that many Pokemon for the project because I'm not that good at it. I just take what people have tried to do and redraw them, such as Thorndle, the platypus and more recently the swans.

How about this? Since Hippos tend to swim just at surface level and sometimes have smaller animals rest on top of it, how about a third stage that has a sandy back? It would look like a floating island if it were to swim. Sort of a water-Torterra, if you will. You can throw a few clamshells or starfish on there and suddenly you even fit the Beach theme that was voted on.

The earlier stages can be fat and cute.

Are you guys seriously hyped about / trying to a bug /grass starter? I can't think of a shittier typing for a starter and keep in mind the way it's designed every one in the line will be bug/grass. It won't even Quiver Dance itself into relevance because it's not a moth or butterfly. Just make it into a late game bug instead, you don't need to latch onto any grass/fire/water design to fill the starter role.

What do we make of this design?

First stage is a prankster pokemon, normal/dark that likes to trick others and scare people. Known for stealing food and items.
Other pokemon tend to avoid it.
Its based on kids that dress up as ghosts for halloween.

Second stage
it is said it once stole from a burial site and became cursed. Wherever it goes, items disapear. Other pokemon tend to avoid it.
Normal/dark ability prankster

3rd stage: normal/ghost Ability levitate
This pokemon is said to bring misfortune upon anyone who sees it.
It is a rare sight however.
This final stage is based on the curse taking control of the pokemon, effectively dying, and now the ghost that cursed it controls its body. hence the hollow eyes and the shadowy figure
dont tell me this is too edgy, we all know and love parasect dont we.

Alternate 3rd stage, the 4th image could use some work imo, maybe a larger body.

I like the concept and the rightmost design. I feel they all could need some work. The proportions are not quite how I'd like them.

I feel the first stage should be a more rounded up top and the second stage should have a body shape more resembling that of Pignite and Quilladin.

although I dont like your design I like the idea of adding something to it.
however the ball is meant to resemble a prisoner theme, like the pokemon became trapped.

This is the original discription:
It starts of with a small typical ghost.
By typical i mean, the kind kids dress up as when its halloween, you know a white blanket, with 2 large holes for the eyes, which are just plain dark blue/black colored.
It has no arms, and from under the blanket you can see 2 dark feet with 3 pointy toes.
It has a smile on its face which looks like stitches.
It is normal/dark type. Ability prankster.
Known for scaring other pokemon and stealing their berries, this pokemon loves to play pranks on others.

The second stage has arms added, with 3 large fingers and its no longer smiling,
its larger aswell, typing, normal/dark
Other pokemon avoid it, it is said to be cursed after stealing from a burial site.

The 3rd stage is a floating form of the previous stage without legs, the eyes are now hollow. Its mouth is open but appears to be melting/torn
underneath it is a shadowy circle, that has 2 dark mean looking eyes.
Typing, normal/ghost, ability levitate.
This pokemon is said to bring misfortune upon anyone who sees it.
It is a rare sight however.

It is a slow pokemon with high HP, atk and good other stats.
Personally id like it as a psuedo, or semi psuedo.

The underlying thought it basically that it was a childlike pokemon that did pranks, and crossed the line several times, eventually it became cursed, abandoned and feared, eventually dying and becomming a corrupted soul in its final stage.

Really now.
Plenty of bug types of original 'mons aren't exactly designed to look like what they're based on. The head isn't much of an issue.
Even scyther doesn't have that mantis head and it still looks like one, same with Leavanny.

That's real fucking pretty, especially the head/face. Good design. This board has too many plebs who want just "literally exactly that animal + type = pokemon".
Still not very sold on there being a bug starter though and with some extra fairy inspired details this could be bug/fairy type (not regional shit bug).
