I feel that a Leprechaun pokemon would work better as a Fairy/Grass or Fairy/Dark. Convict is a pretty cool idea though.

I could see it having an ability like Gold Rush which doubles its speed when holding a Nugget, or triples it if it's holding a Big Nugget.

Well, the elephant starts off looking like an olympic swimmer. The middle stage is weird but I can't describe how, and the final stage has too much going on.

If we're looking for a beach theme, maybe there should be some semblance of beach on it's back rather than a mountain? The hippo could probably work for that.

What I don't like about the elephant line as a whole and the hippo duo is that the eyes change so drastically.

The final is supposed to have more of a cliff theme because apparently cliffs are more associated with the ocean in australia than typical beach things, although the trunk is supposed to be kind of a cross between a water spout and a palm tree to give it a bit of a "walking island" look

Personally I'm not a big fan on the elephant idea because it's reminiscent of what we tried to do for Bubbalo - which did not turn out well at all.

Since we seem to be doing a reptile and a bug (this still confuses me), I think we need a fuzzy animal of some kind for the water type. I still believe we can pull off a platypus, but we need more input from artists.

I feel that the sugar glider is really nice in concept, and it's got a decent base design going for it. I would love to see it appear in the game, but I'm not sure if I personally would want it as a starter.

As far as its evolutions go, I really liked this redesign people did a couple of threads back. Like, I would love to see it duke it out against a Hawlucha in a wrestling ring.

The fruit bat idea has been around since the original, but that was simply a redesign posted a few threads ago.

But truly, the reason PokeAus fell was because there weren't enough artists contributing and not enough people constructively criticising. No single design brought it down - it was a group failing.

We never decided on what Blocharade's type would be. Most common answers are Water/Psychic, Psychic/Poison and simply Water.

Also its move should change its primary type, not its secondary type, so if some hacker wants to put it on Poppy Nurse it wouldn't fuck the game backwards.

Not at all. They are just similar in that they are their gen's 3-stage fighter lines.

Entirely different design and idea behind them.

That's like saying all the token birds and bugs each gen are just the same.

Thing is, the mantis is a specific bug. I think you guys lack a little critical thinking when it comes to pokes. I don't really follow the threads though, so I might be mistaken in just how much thought was put into either design.

The point is that the final evo of the line looks like Scyther, and the typing follows Leavanny's pattern. I'm not saying it's the end of the world, as we can work on the line and differentiate it, maybe even make it a two-stage wild Pokemon, but you're missing the point.

Make it look different then. It has the literal same body type of Scyther and is grass like Leavanny. How about instead of getting incredibly defensive, try look at what I am saying. I even saw some anon last thread arguing that since Scyther doesn't have a literal mantis head, this one doesn't need one either, effectively arguing to keep the Scyther clone head.

How about mixing a literal orchid with the design? Or any other plant, so you have two things to draw from. Trying to separate it from Scyther shouldn't take away from the design obviously, but I don't see you trying at all yet.

Leavanny is based on a a Leaf Insect (Phylliidae), Syther is based on a generic green Praying Mantis, however it looks very reptilian. Orchic Mantis is different enough from both of them the same way a human bodybuilder is different enough from a human construction worker.

And my point from he start was that the bodytype and head shape of Scyther being similar to this one.

I agree different albeit similar ideas can be done, just saying they also look similar despite their different bases.

More can be done with an orchid mantis.

I was refering to the one on the left this whole time. While it isn't just scyther, I don't think I was wrong in saying they have the same bodytype.

It looks like it got legs and arms, but that's just it. It got no fluff to clearly separate it from Scyther. We can do a lot with it being an orchid/flower though. The right one is actually pretty decent, apart from the head being a bit too literally that of a mantis, in my opinion.

I have given constructive critique. Twice now I've mentioned drawing more inspiration from the flower, while my other main points has been differentiating it from scyther in bodytype/shape.

This can be done by tempering with the head crest, maybe giving it 4 legs? Making it less humanoid? Emphasizing parts of the design that isn't emphasized in Scyther/Leavanny? Not saying it needs either of these, hell, even making it look fabulous with flowers would probably be enough. Or making an obvious flower show true, like a literal/stylized orchid somewhere on it. Or another flower, mixing the mantis with a literal flower given that it is grass type.

Well they are both bipedal, insects and only have 4 arms/legs (humanoid look). From a different angle it becomes apparent though that scyther has a downward pointing butt whereas both mantis ideas have the butt going backwards realistically (like Leavanny)
I'd keep the head of the left version and add the flower like butt of the right version, maybe make it real flowery soft. The flower poncho look of the left one is already pretty unique and I'd keep it.

I don't think grass/flying is a great idea, guys. Sage kinda already did that for their starter. I'm not saying we need to avoid every type combo sage used, but maybe keep that typing away from starter. I think it's more suited to being grass/fairy, anyway.

Putting spore on a starter seems retarded, especially a non fungus one. All other good grass types are good DESPITE being grass type (or being a giant fucking cunt of a pokemon like skymin, think togekiss but it fucking one shots you every now and then)

The only other combo that works in grass's favour is grass/rock, currently only taken by cradily which is renowned in lower tiers for hardcore stall due to its a ok typing. (two shit typing making a good one, go figure)

Then again they thought it being poison rather than a bug fit better, and while looking at it, it's more a monster than a literal bug. It's hard to get away from any of the bug designs for the mantis so far to be anything but part bug type, as the base is obvious.

But yeah, it's convoluted. It is a bug type starter that becomes not a bug.

it may as well just be weak to fighting. Since steel/poison are not offensive types, and ice types get anally fucked by rocks (which it happens to be).

It just gels really well. Cradily can't abuse it to its fullest extent with its nonexistant attacking stats, but we could do something with it.

I drew both of the concepts of pic related and people have been arguing about them and right now the mantis so i'll explain

The mantis is based on an orchid mantis and a bit of the choeradodis'. Also based on armored samurai (and Knights)

The "scyther head" of the mantis is based on the orchid mantis' pointy head.

I don't know what is the commotion about the humanoid body type. The concept i posted was in a different angle so it looks like it's standing straight but it's not. It's crouching in side-view.

I based it of on plenty of choeradodis, or mantises with an expanded thorax (which Leavanny is based on) but i toned it out a bit so it won't look like i ripped off Leavanny but still people think i did, assuming because i 'copied' it's arm design but that's not the case. I tried to make the arms look like petals like in the orchid mantis but anyway, it still looks the same with Leavanny but i don't care.

It's cool in a sense, but it does not give me very much of a pokemon vibe. Obscuring the eyes like that makes it a lot less personable and makes it lack personality. I can't think of a pokemon off the top of my head where some eyes aren't showing in some way or fashion.

I like the horns on the sides myself, but thanks for taking the time to show what they'd be without them.

I feel that works a lot better! It's subtle enough to give it some kind of knight vibe without being too intrusive. Seems like it would be a little bit difficult to translate to a sprite seeing as it such a delicate detail. It also distracts a bit from the pink stripe going across the mask. Both look good though.

If you want to implement a wheel, you do it like Donphan. Don't just stick wheels on it and call it a day.

The difference between Pokemon and Digimon is that Pokemon are more organic (they ARE the wheel) whilst Digimon rely more on inorganic elements as accessories, such as your road hog.

Exactly. Thorndle has no direction and everything we've done in the past looked like crap. Perhaps a different creature would be easier to come up with three stages for in the fire type, and you can be sure coming up with a thorny plant motif for thorndle would be easy.

Really the only reason he's fire is because of the "devil" part and associating lizards with fire. But he would be great as a grass type

Every fire type is something with fire elements stuck on it. Whatever else someone comes up with for the fire starter will be the exact same thing.

At least people understand beyond that for Thorndle because it's a creature from a desert environment - which fits the theme of what we wanted for our starters anyway.

The only viable option would be to make it more like a cactus, which would massively alter the design and take up the 'desert' slot so we'd somehow have to have a fire type based on a habitat other than the desert.

Its not the best drawing, but the idea was a normally black Panther whose rosettes glowed and heated up, igniting parts of it in flames.
The nose was also a vent to release smoke, clouding it as it runs through the jungle.

How about if Thorndle's evolutions were based on sand art? Thorndle has not sand, of course, the middle stage has an unorganized mound, and the final stage uses the sand to create armor. It is also used for intimidation.

It would keep one of its proposed "final evo" typings (Fire/Ground), and it would fit thematically about it losing to Water (the typing is 4x weak, and water destroys sand sculpture)

I feel just everything about it is done right. The proportions, the (original) colors, the fact that it has some level of detail without going overboard. To me it feels like a starter, but at the same time offers the dank eyes which I have never really seen in a starter before. It's unique, good looking, and has a lot of potential.

Try coming up with a better design, though I doubt you ever could if the extent of your criticism only goes to "doens't even look good". Nonconstructive bullshit like that is what kills projects, not pokemon designs.

I don't think this necessarily needs to be a fire starter. Could be a regional cat, two stages. Type could be just fire or any other addition of normal, dark (cause black) or fairy (black cat).

You're using other people's ideas to build new pokemon. You said "we can't just use other people's ideas, you know." But you are... you are using other people's ideas - what you meant to say was "We can't just use other people's ideas without their permissions." I recognize the concept of intellectual property and the whole general shittiness of "stealing" someone's ideas, but 1) if you're not going to try to profit or publish form this then no-one is going to pursue you legally, 2) no one in this thread has given explicit permission anyway, plus you're all anonymous - anyone's stuff you use could turn around and pursue action against you and you would have no grounds to fight it. All I'm saying is that whether these ideas are contributed by their actual artists or people who stole them and are trying to take credit, the danger posed to you and the potential consequenses are pretty much exactly the same.

Also, I don't particularly care to see exact copies of the things I submitted here - I was just posting them to be used as inspiration.

I personally think we need to harness our inner man children a bit when we make these pokemon. When I was a kid, Blastoise's water cannons were the coolest thing ever. Kangaskhan was my favorite designwise though as I liked all the little details and the color composition.

All I see is a variety of spikes in different places and sizes. Unless I'm missing something here there should be another design idea for how the spikes look on top of animal+type, maybe look for more devil inspiration for the body.

Actually you're ruining the project with your attitude.

Here's grass Thorndle. The top one is a simple recolor borrowing colors from other starters as starters tend to share colors. The middle one makes the spiky bits a rose-thorn color (copied from an actual thorn. The bottom one makes even the arm spiky bits thorn colored.

You're right in a sense, but I feel you are wrong in another. Charmander is more of a salamander which eventually turns into a dragon. Thorndle is a horned lizard.

Sure, they are both reptilian, but I feel they are both different enough in their own sense provided we don't turn it's evolutions into flying fire breathing dragons.
